Approved: Cult Of Luna – I: The Weapon
By Andy Malt | Published on Tuesday 22 January 2013
Swedish post-metal outfit Cult Of Luna released their last album, ‘Eternal Kingdom’, four and a half years ago in 2008. As one of the genre’s most respected bands, and given the wait, their new material was going to have some considerable expectations to live up to – particularly as in that time their US counterparts Isis split up.
Released online late last year, ‘I: The Weapon’, the first single from new album ‘Vertikal’, set any fears to rest. Through nine and a half minutes of sharp riffs and carefully executed twists in tone and atmosphere it finds the band on full form. Touches of synths and experiments with percussion ensure that there are plenty of layers to uncover with each new listen.
‘Vertikal’ is due for release on 29 Jan, and Cult Of Luna will play The Garage in London tonight. You can listen to ‘I: The Weapon’ here:
