Approved: Kate Boy – Northern Lights

CMU Approved

Kate Boy

Kate Boy emerged last year, like so many new indie pop acts these days, with their history scrubbed from the internet and one great song left in its place. It can be frustrating to struggle around trying to find what scraps of information are left, but it also manufactures intrigue, which I guess is the point. And it also ensures a magnified focus on that one song. Which in Kate Boy’s case was ‘Northern Lights’, and has been a track I’ve returned to again and again since it appeared.

A few months on and the group are being less aloof, revealing that they are Australian singer-songwriter Kate Akhurst and Swedish production trio Rocket Boy (hence, Kate Boy). It’s a hook up that works incredibly well, with Rocket Boy’s slick but often understated music and Akhurst’s voice wrapping themselves around each other, one occasionally slipping loose and dancing over to the listener to make sure you know they know you’re there.

The band’s debut EP came out in Sweden this week through IAMSOUND, and will follow in the UK on 11 Mar. As well as remixes of ‘Northern Lights’ by Taken By Trees and Superhumanoids (plus the original, of course), there’s also the track ‘In Your Eyes’. Listen to that on SoundCloud here, and watch the video for ‘Northern Lights’ here:
