Approved: MIA – Bring The Noize
By Aly Barchi | Published on Wednesday 19 June 2013
MIA said she’d do it; and she did. And by ‘it’ I mean ‘bring the noise’ via new single ‘Bring The Noize’, a blinding, deafening all-in amp battery of that same title that had its initial play on Radio 1 on Monday night.
Given the things she said on-air at the time, (“It’s not easy, it’s not easy, it’s not easy”), the LP from which its taken, ‘Matangi’, is her “last stab” at placating labels whilst still saving face. Many-times postponed because it was “too positive” to chime with MIA’s hard-faced image, its final draft may well be planted in her private disenchantment with tabloids, imitators and (again), labels; with red tape and dated male machismo (so, Diplo); with passivity, faintheartedness and anything that isn’t original.
At least, that’s what I’m taking from ‘Bring The Noize’, which, my ‘maybes’ aside, is really pretty explicit in spitting its acid facts and axioms, as if by obligation, “like a rotten tooth”. Like Kanye West’s ‘New Slaves’, since that’s topical, it’s bare, reactionary and anti-decadent – all cheap, rattling loops in place of costly sampling; like ‘Paper Planes’ with its sing-along shot away, and its pistol-fire isolated.
Great! Here it is:
