Approved: Oval Space presents Bugge Wesseltoft & Friends
By Paul Vig | Published on Friday 6 July 2012
The Norwegian pianist behind the dancey Jazzland imprint and New Conceptions Of Jazz movement in the mid 1990s, Bugge Wesseltoft, brings his uber-cool seven person jazz ensemble Bugge & Friends to London for a rare UK show at Oval Space Space in Bethnal Green with DJ support from two big names: Jazzanova and special guest Ashley Beedle.
At this new venue, which has put on a rather good programme of events so far, Bugge & Friends will bring together long time pals and associates including Blue Note trumpeter Erik Truffaz, the rather delectable US producer Joaquin ‘Joe’ Claussell, Saxophonist Ilhan Ershain and a three piece rhythm section.
Sonar Kollectiv man Alex Barck from Jazzanova, and the Ballistic Brother and X-Press 2 man Ashley Beedle, will join in the affair for two intimate DJ sets before and after the performance.
Maybe a little arty, but Wessletoft at the Barbican really did impress when I saw him way back in 2004, when he was billed alongside Matt Herbert’s Big Band. Read my ancient review of that night here.
Thursday 12 Jul, 2012, Oval Space, 29-32 The Oval, E2 9DT, £12.50 – £17.50, 7.30pm, more information here.
