Approved: Porcelain Raft – Strange Weekend

Porcelain Raft

I’ve been eager to hear a full album from Porcelain Raft ever since I first stumbled across him in summer 2010. So when I finally got my hands on a promo copy of multi-instrumentalist Mauro Remiddi’s first long player late last year it was an exciting moment. And thankfully the anticipation didn’t kill the final reveal, ‘Strange Weekend’ being every bit the beautifully crafted and enveloping effort I’d hoped for.

Opening track ‘Drifting In And Out’ sets the tone perfectly, with synths swelling and retracting underneath Remiddi’s wispy, Italian-accented vocals. Previous single ‘Put Me To Sleep’, continuing the unconscious-themed song titles, ups the pace but gradually draws you into a trance-like state with swirling guitar, synth and drums. It’s a very early contender for my favourite album of 2012, and I don’t think it’ll have much trouble maintaining that position for the next eleven months or so.

Released by Secretly Canadian on 23 Jan, the album is available to stream in full right now thanks to Hype Machine, so you don’t have to take my word for how brilliant it is. And don’t forget that you can also catch Porcelain Raft on tour with M83 this week.
