R Stevie Moore

A real-life showbiz sexagenarian (his first studio release dates to 1968), lo-fi treasure R Stevie Moore – nee Robert Steven – now has 44 fertile years’ worth of solo recordings and collaborations to his oft-abbreviated name. I mean really, we’re talking a discography of hundreds, if not thousands. Now, The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess has collated twelve selected R Stevie recordings to make ‘Lo Fi High Fives’, a ‘Kind Of Best Of’ and basic means of re-packaging Moore’s oeuvre for the uninitiated.

What’s most apparent from the collection is the breadth of the musical assays he’s made over the decades, from alt classic ‘Pop Music’, to ‘Here Comes Summer Again’ (an arch play on ‘Pet Sounds’), to the LP’s kitty-backed (ie featuring a shrill chorus of cat noise) last ditty ‘Find Any’, whose lyrics are partly hidden in this piece of “bit poetry”, copyright circa 2010. Like the hotel bathrobe he was inexplicably wearing when I saw him play live back in June, R Stevie can try most anything on, and carry it off with great aplomb.

Set for release via Tim Burgess’ label O Generation on 6 Aug (and featuring David Quantick’s great sleeve notes), the LP is now streaming on Hype Machine, of all places, and I think you should listen to it now:
