Approved: Steve Mason – Fight Them Back
By Andy Malt | Published on Tuesday 18 December 2012
One of our artists of 2010, that year saw former Beta Band frontman Steve Mason release his first solo album under his own name – having previously released as King Biscuit Time and Black Affair. The record saw Mason battle his demons to create an intensely personal record, driven by great songs (and given a pop touch by producer Richard X). While being very introspective, as touring for the album went on, Mason’s on stage chat became increasingly political, particularly after the various demonstrations and riots of 2011.
That influence has now seeped into his music making, and it seems that his new album, ‘Monkey Minds In The Devil’s Time’, will counter his last record by detailing his view of the world outside himself. With the album due out on 11 Mar next year through Domino/Double Six, the first single, ‘Fight Them Back’, was released digitally this week. In it, he manages the difficult balancing act that is sending a message through an accessible song – laying angry, confrontational lyrics over laid back music. Though the video, which you can see below, is anything but laid back.
