Dark, a bit over the top, very, very loud, and emanating from Russia, Vagina Vangi is the work of Moscow-based producer Ilya Arhipov. Often slapped with the witch house brush, he’s opted for ‘holy pop’ as his genre tag. I’m not sure if that’s better. Though on his SoundCloud page I see he’s tagged most tracks as either ‘doomstep’ or ‘judgement’, both of which give a nod to the apocalyptically loud synths that shudder through his songs.
Loud they may be, but they’re often led by quite soft vocals that contrast the more industrial sounds below them. Although to call this music industrial doesn’t really get across that what lies at the heart of all of these songs is straight-up electropop. Just electropop designed to be played closer to the end of the world than the 80s.
There are two EPs available on the Vagina Vangi Bandcamp page, the latest of which, ‘Locked’, is available for whatever price you see fit. Check out ‘Of Chaos And Hell’ from that EP, which features vocals from Yana Blinder, below.
