Bernie Nolan, lead singer with sibling group The Nolans, has died aged 52 after a long battle with breast cancer.

Although more prominent in more recent years for her acting work, especially in TV series like ‘Brookside’ and ‘The Bill’, Nolan will be best remembered for her pop career, and especially The Nolans’ biggest hit ‘I’m in the Mood For Dancing’.

Nolan was first diagnosed with cancer in 2010, but after chemotherapy and a mastectomy she appeared to have overcome the disease two years later. But shortly after getting the all-clear, the illness returned and spread to other parts of her body.

A spokesman for the singer’s family told reporters yesterday: “Bernie passed away peacefully this morning with all of her family around her. The entire family are devastated to have lost beloved Bernie, a wonderful wife, adoring mother and loving sister, she is irreplaceable”.

There had been tensions between the various Nolan sisters over the years, not least in 2008 when two of the siblings, Denise and Anne, were left out of a major reunion tour. However, in a recent autobiography, Bernie said that the reunion was still “one of the best things I’ve ever done”, adding that she had since made peace with all her sisters.
