The music industry remains in a state of flux – that’s no secret – but unlike most other media and entertainment sectors, the opportunities presented by the digital era already outnumber the threats by quite a margin. The challenge is working out how to maximise traditional revenue streams, which new revenues to capitalise on, how to better integrate different strands of the industry, and what kind of deals artists and music companies should be doing to enable all that to happen.
Sounds simple, and yet mindbogglingly complicated all at the same time, doesn’t it? The first step is reviewing the industry as it currently stands and the various players that make it happen. Then you need to analyse the numerous ways artists and their business partners can monetise intellectual property, live performance and the fan relationship. And then you can start to consider the kinds of business deals and investment models that can enable all parties to prosper in the new music business. And that process is simple, because we’ve done half the work for you.
The CMU Training course ‘Revenue, Investment & Deals’ is a concise but in-depth review of the music industry in 2012, looking at what opportunities are open to artists and their business partners, and rights and music-brand owners, and how deals can be structured to enable those opportunities to be capitalised upon. Things are changing fast, but in one day this course will help you work out where you sit in the wider scheme of things, get up to date on the latest developments, and prepare yourself for the way we will all do business in the music world in the next decade.
Past participants on this course have included artists, managers, promoters, publishers, marketers, digital experts, and label owners and executives, from the biggest music companies in the world, and the most exciting independent players and start ups. Some participants are new to the industry, some have worked in it for decades, but the feedback is always the same: it’s invigorating to see such a complicated industry summarised so concisely, enlightening to learn about new revenue opportunities, investment options and business deals, and inspiring to see the great opportunities that lie ahead.
Revenue, Investment & Deals is one of three CMU Training courses, each of which is staged in Shoreditch every other month. The next edition of this course is next Wednesday, 14 Mar, and we have some places left. Places are just £95 plus VAT, including lunch and a copy of accompanying slides. It would be great if you could join us, to discover and debate the new music business, and to meet and network with like minded people. I hope to see you next week!
