So, there you go. I made it through another weekend without leaving any children unattended in a pub. True, I wasn’t relaxing after a hard week of making unpopular decisions about how the country should be run. Or worrying about having to go up in front of the Leveson Inquiry this week. And I don’t have any children. Still, I think it counts. For those of you not about to go in front of Lord Leveson, here are some other things you can look forward to this week.

01: Universal’s EMI bid to enter its next stage. Universal is expected to receive a “statement of objections” in relation to its bid for the EMI record labels from the European Commission this week. Universal originally stated that it believed the purchase would be approved without remedy. However, according to The Financial Times, the company has already submitted some proposals to be allowed to proceed, but EC regulators have apparently said those proposals do not go far enough.

02: Ian Hargreaves and Richard Hooper speak at First Monday. Technically it’s not the first Monday of June, but we’ll allow the team at First Monday a little leeway, as they’ve bagged two very interesting speakers this month. Ian Hargreaves and Richard Hooper, the men behind the government’s latest review of copyright law, will be in conversation at this event, which takes place tonight in Soho. Tickets are free, so sign up now!

03: CMU Training discount. There’s no CMU Training course scheduled for this week, but you can prepare yourself for the beginning of the next season of events later this month. Courses cover music business models (20 Jun), social media and fan engagement (27 Jun), promoting music (4 Jul) and music rights (11 Jul). And this summer there is a special offer for anyone who books into multiple courses, with a 25% discount if you attend two, and 40% off if you attend three or more. Which would be a saving of £114.

04: New releases. It’s another busy week for new releases, so let’s press on quickly. Albums this week include Hot Chip, Bobby Womack, Maximo Park, Dirty Projectors, The Hundred In The Hands, A Place To Bury Strangers, Future Of The Left, Dent May, Guided By Voices, SpaceGhostPurrp, Visions Of Trees, Amanda Mair, plus there’s a new J Dilla tribute LP. On the singles and EPs front, Interpol’s Paul Banks has a solo EP out, AlunaGeorge‘s ‘You Know You Like It’ EP is out on vinyl, and both Gold Panda and Nathan Fake have new singles out.

05: Gigs. Playing one-off shows in our nation’s fair capital are Usher, Ash, Liars, The Walkmen, Amanda Mair, while Kanye West and Jay-Z will bring their Watch The Throne show to Manchester and Birmingham, and Bat For Lashes will play a low-key show in Cambridge. Also touring this week are Sunn o))), Future Of The Left and The View, plus you can catch Plan B and Will Young in various forests. Oh, and the Son Of Dork musical is finally opening!

If all that reading’s made your eyes all tired, but you still have an insatiable desire for music business-related chatter, be sure to go and check out this week’s CMU podcast.
