Hey, so England are out of Euro 2012 on penalties, as per tradition, which means we can all stop pretending we like football and won’t have to hear any more from the BBC’s inane commentators. We do have to start pretending to care about tennis today though. Oh well. And speaking of inane commentary, here’s my round up of what’s coming up in the wonderful world of music this week.

01: Stone Roses Heaton Park shows. “I have no desire whatsoever to desecrate the grave of seminal Manchester pop group The Stone Roses”, once wrote the band’s guitarist John Squire. Then he changed his mind. This week sees Squire and his bandmates enter the most frantic stage of their grave dancing by playing three nights at Heaton Park in their home town of Manchester.

02: Damon Albarn’s ‘Doctor Dee’ opens. Albarn has ticked off a lot of boxes in his musical career. Unnecessarily reform a band that would be better left in the past as a happy memory – tick. Write an opera – tick. Write two operas – that too. Albarn’s second opera, ‘Doctor Dee’, which was premiered at last year’s Manchester International Festival, opens at The Coliseum in London tonight.

03. Silver Clef Awards. The Silver Clef Awards, organised by the Nordoff Robbins music charity, will take place this Friday at the Park Lane Hilton in London. Among those artists to be honoured will be Kylie Minogue, whose 25 years in music will be marked, and Andrew Lloyd-Webber, whose entire lifetime apparently warrants a trophy. Jessie J will be named Best British Act. Oh well.

04: New releases. Maroon 5 have a new album out this week, which is depressing news. But it’s OK, you can take your mind of this sad fact by listening to new albums from Metric and Fang Island. And if that doesn’t work, there’s always the latest offering from R Kelly. Singles and EPs out this week include new releases from Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, White Denim and latest signing to Best Fit Recordings, Faye. Also, George Michael‘s new single, marking the 30th anniversary of the release of ‘Wham Rap’, gets its radio premiere this Friday.

05: Gigs. Tonight you can catch Nicki Minaj playing her second night at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, followed by shows in Birmingham and Manchester later in the week. M83 will also play shows in Belfast and Manchester, while Sean Paul has a one-off London date booked, Faye is over from Sweden to mark the release of her debut single for Best Fit Recordings, and brilliant indie label Stolen Recordings has a showcase night at the Shacklewell Arms in Dalston featuring Teleman, My Sad Captains and Race Horses.
