Five Day Forecast – w/c 7 Nov 2011

Good morning. I moved house this weekend, which is a fairly tedious topic to start this off with. Oh well, it’s what happened. Now I’m tried and when I go home this evening I have more unpacking of boxes to look forward to.

Still, doing that over the weekend gave me the opportunity to listen to several episodes of Jon Ronson’s Radio 4 series, which is never a bad thing. If you have otherwise boring tasks ahead of you, I heartily recommend checking it out on his website. But read this extra exciting Five Day Forecast first.

01: EMI sale. Will it happen? Will it not? I just don’t know. But I committed myself to running this every week on the off chance that it actually happens. It probably is about time Citigroup made some kind of an announcement about something, even it’s just to vent a bit about how tedious this sale process has been. Maybe that’s not such a good negotiating tactic. But possible buyers Universal and Warner stomped off in a huff, so maybe Citi could do the same. Although the latest word is that Warner and Universal might have stomped back into the negotiations. It’s anybody’s guess what’s actually going on. It’s still possible someone from Citigroup might just try and dump EMI behind some bins and pretend they never saw it.

02: Conrad Murray verdict. The jury began deliberating on Friday, trying to decide if Conrad Murray was directly responsible for Michael Jackson’s death or if he was just generally negligent in his treatment of the singer. Or they could decide he’s completely innocent, though that seems unlikely. They’ll be back in their deliberating room later today to further talk it out, and unless there’s some major confusion over the various guilty options, it seems likely there will be a ruling later this week.

03: AIM Independent Music Awards. The very first AIM Independent Music Awards will take place this Thursday, hosted by Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens. Björk will receive the Outstanding Contribution To Music Award, while Domino Records founder Laurence Bell will be given the Pioneer Award. All the other winners will be announced on the night, and in the run up to that Amazing Radio is spending this week celebrating various indie labels. In a busy week for awards ceremonies, the UK Music Video Awards take place tomorrow and the Student Radio Awards will be handed out on Wednesday.

04: New releases. This week David Lynch releases his debut album. Not words I ever expected to write. It’s called ‘Crazy Clown Time’ and follows on from the double A-side single the brilliant film director released almost a year ago. Other artists with albums out this week include Atlas Sound, Mike Doughty, Oneohtrix Point Never and The Sound Of Arrows. You can also now get hold of new EPs from Brian Eno and Rick Holland, Kurt Vile and Esben And The Witch, plus singles by Zulu Winter and PET.

05: Gigs. Justin Bieber will be turning on the Christmas lights at both Westfield shopping centres in London today. And it would be inappropriate for me to type the joke I just thought of to wrap up that statement. Anyway, it’ not a gig, so let’s just move on. Will Haven, Oh Land, Kid Koala and Frank Ocean all have one-off shows coming up in London this week, while on tour you’ll find Tinchy Stryder, Smashing Pumpkins, St Vincent, Tom Vek, Friendly Fires, Girls, Wild Beasts, Death In Vegas, Thomas Dolby, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Los Campesinos!, Vessels and Zooey Van Gooey.
