The Proper Ornaments

Now also one quarter of Veronica Falls, James Hoare began The Proper Ornaments with Argentine singer/guitarist Max Clapps in 2006, though in those distant days they were named The Mystics.

The band’s back lineage (as this Fader article recaps, prior to a really weird sleepwalking anecdote about Hoare) is strewn with various side collaborations featuring Metronomy’s Joseph Mount, Male Bonding’s Robin Silas Christian and Wesley Patrick Gonzalez of Let’s Wrestle. Why, Michael Lovett aka NCZA/Lines was even TPO’s bassist for a time.

But let’s withdraw from the band’s biography, and instead spotlight the velveteen psych caress of ‘Shining Bright’ and 2011 single ‘Who Thought’ (preview both tracks in that order below), as feature on the duo’s self-titled debut EP. Though differing in many respects, each shares a deft and delicate sonic quality, spinning low-slung Byrds/Brian Wilson-esque songcraft on a crux of taut rhythms and vague harmonic reveries. If you’d like to see all that translated to a live Great Escape stage, The Proper Ornaments play the Green Door Store on 12 May at 11.30pm.
