Mogwai’s Braithwaite calls on bands to save Glasgow stone circle
By Aly Barchi | Published on Friday 5 July 2013
Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai/Scottish fame has called on a heap of artists to play a show in aid of Glasgow’s Sighthill Stone Circle.
Braithwaite’s late father was part of the team who built the landmark back in 1979, it being hailed at the time as Britain’s first astronomically-aligned stone circle in 3500 years. It’s since been placed in danger of being dismantled by Glasgow City Council, as plans are made (albeit plans that hinge on Glasgow winning its bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games) for a £250 million redevelopment in the area.
The show takes place at Platform (in Glasgow) on 27 Jul, and will feature live sets by Braithwaite, Arab Strap’s Aidan Moffat, Eugene Kelly, Emma Pollock, RM Hubbert, Remember Remember and The Twilight Sad. Tickets are available here.
Says Braithwaite via this in-depth The Quietus Q&A: “The main objective is to just get the story out about the stones as much as possible and to keep pressure on the council over their position, as the decision as to whether they remain or whether they destroy them is still to be made”.
