A range of portraits by Bob Dylan is to go on display at the London-based National Portrait Gallery later this month. Billed as “an amalgamation of features the musician has collected from life, memory and his imagination and fashioned into people”, ‘Bob Dylan: Face Value’ will present twelve newish pastel drawings of real and fictional characters, as will a book of the same name that’ll be available later this year.

Despite sketching since he was a child, Dylan only began showing his work six years ago, and hasn’t exhibited in the UK since 2008.

He says: “I’ve done sketching most of my life. In notebooks, on napkins, on rough paper or cardboard, plates and coffee pots… basically when there’s something to look at – so it’s not new for me. As to exhibiting it…”

The National Portrait Gallery’s director Sandy Nairne adds: “There is an indirect but delightful relationship with Dylan, who is one of our great, even extraordinary storytellers. To have his stories in visual form, to allow the viewer to make their own stories from his work, is intriguing”.

‘Bob Dylan: Face Value’ opens at the NPG on 24 Aug, closing on 5 Jan 2014. Find a pair of preview images via The Telegraph.
