Ghostpoet

Rapper Ghostpoet released his Mercury nominated debut album, ‘Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy’, through Giles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings label in 2011. Signing to Play It Again Sam the following year, he released the follow-up, ‘Some Say I So I Say Light’, in May just gone.

The next single from the album, ‘Cold Win’, is released on 26 Aug, and Ghostpoet will be heading out on a tour of the UK in October, finishing with a date at London’s Hackney Empire on 24 Oct.

Ahead of all that, we asked Ghostpoet to put together a playlist for us, about which he said: “This is a playlist comprised of music I’m discovering, re-discovering and want people to know about. I love music so much but my mind is so easily distracted hence the various genres and sounds, enjoy!”

GHOSTPOET’S TEN
Subscribe to this playlist on Spotify, and then read on to find out more about Ghostpoet’s choices.

01 Photek – Aleph 1
Deep, dark, disturbing future (even then) music, I’m just discovering Photek properly, loving his work.

02 Jamie Lidell – When I Come Back Around
One of his early songs and it’s experimental funk from the silky toned one. I love watching him live – such energy and experimentation.

03 Carl Craig – Angel (Jerome S Vocal Mix)
I watched a short modular documentary recently featuring Mr Craig. If I’m honest, I never really listened to his music before. I went rooting around and this is one of the first tunes to catch my attention, very moody.

04 The Doors – Alabama Song
I heard this whilst watching Simon Pegg’s latest film ‘The World’s End’. It sounded fun so I got the old Spotify out and discovered its origins – reminds me of a fun fair experience I once had… but that’s another story.

05 Grizzly Bear – While You Wait For The Others
I’ve been rediscovering Grizzly Bear of late. Their songwriting has always intrigued me. I’ve had this song off the ‘Veckatimist’ album on repeat for a while now, great track.

06 Rocket Number Nine – Lope
This is off their new album ‘MeYouWeYou’, which has just come out I believe. I’ve been a fan for a long while now, great to hear new music from them.

07 Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson – Superman Lover
I heard this for the first time on a warm night at a festival in Croatia, it just encapsulated the vibe so perfectly. Lovely tune, smooth as silk.

08 Ali Mohammed Birra – Awash 1973
And I heard this for the first time the other day. It’s on a wonderful classic Ethiopian jazz compilation called ‘Ethiopiques 28’, a must listen in my humble opinion.

09 Little Richard – I’m Just A Lonely Guy
I’d never heard anything other than Little Richard’s commercial hits so was mightily intrigued by his early blues stuff. Such a great song, this. Full of pain and emotion… deep listening.

10 The Soft Machine – Hibou Anenome And Bear
Love psychedelic music in all its forms and these guys are a great example from the genre. I wish I could make music like this. Maybe I will one day.
