Q&A: Run, WALK!

run,WALK!

Both just eighteen, run,WALK! are an indie punk duo made up of bassist and vocalist Matt Pickering-Copley and drummer Tom Clements. Having caused a stir on the underground for the past year or two, they steadily built a name for themselves before signing to super-excellent indie label Holy Roar. Taking their musical influences from a wide range of different bands, from Dillinger Escape Plan to The Beatles, the run,WALK! sound has been described as Lightning Bolt meets Fugazi meets Death From Above 1979, maybe with a bit of The Maccabees thrown in. The band released their lengthily-titled debut mini-album ‘I Hope This All Works Out So I Can Stop Standing On Even Amounts Of Manholes In The Street’ earlier this month. We spoke to Matt to find out more.

Q1 How did you start out making music?
We met while playing gigs together in other bands. I played in run,WALK! with a different drummer while Tom was in another band called Feralmare. My old drummer left to concentrate on education and after many drunken brainstorming sessions at Reading 2008, I stole Tom.

Q2 What inspired your latest album?
People we hate, ex-girlfriends and books we love.

Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?
We collect ideas separately, rendezvous in Tom’s living room and go from there. We usually write songs incredibly fast because, you know, there’s only two of us.

Q4 Which artists influence your work?
We listen to so much stuff. I tend to lean more to the heavy side of things like Dillinger Escape Plan and Converge, whereas Tom will listen to anything from The Beatles to pretty much any hardcore.

Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
Don’t judge us because we’re a two-piece, or pigeonhole us with obvious comparisons.

Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest album, and for the future?
Basically, all we want to do is play shows, so we’ll take up any opportunities to tour. Hopefully, this release will help people realise we’re not a band that sticks to one style or genre. In regards to the future, we’re really not sure, probably just tonnes of limited releases!
