Single Review: The Qemists – On the Run (feat. Jenna G) (Ninja Tune)
By Paul Vig | Published on Monday 6 April 2009
‘Drum n bass for indie kids’ is probably how best to describe this single, and goes for that crossover niche. To be honest, I didn’t rate the ‘Join The Q’ album that much, but apparently it went top 10 in Japan, if that’s anything to go by. The Qems employ Mancunian lass Jenna G who can belt out a lyric or two, and found fame with Uncut’s rather good ‘Midnight’ in 2003. And she does well in this track, too. The Qemists’ own VIP mix gets a bit too Pendulum on us with the compulsory breakdown with horns and drumkit before going into the standard wibbly rise and fall bassline. The album version is one to go for – strings, drums and Jenna in full effect, and it has a kind of jump around feel with its little guitar riffs. Despite my initial reservations, it’s grown on me. It is quite poppy, but not overly so. There is an instrumental version of the lead track, too, which also works well. However, the B side ‘Play With Fire’ is very average and has a bit of an Eastern twist to it which seems to be a bit of a flavour of the season. The Qems are on tour soon and according to many sources these guys truly rock it live. PV
