Van Dyke Parks

Having last year re-pressed a set of vintage LPs, a 70 year old Van Dyke Parks is back with his first new material since 1989. He’ll release originals ‘Dreaming Of Paris’, ‘Wall Street’ and ‘Missin Missisippi’ as part of ‘Songs Cycled’, a play on his 1968 debut ‘Song Cycle’, which will also carry rearrangements, collaborations, and covers. It’s all quite intricate, so click this link to look at all the details.

Says VDP: “This album is released 45 years from ‘Song Cycle’ (when I was but 24). In both cases, there’s a maverick on the loose, with a highly personal set of tunes and instrumentals. All of them reveal an iconoclast tilting at windmills, railing at tyrants, barking at masters of war, and celebrating a shameless commitment to the very definition of ‘Americana’. My first aim is to entertain the ear with beautiful sounds. I try to do that as an arranger. These pieces reveal my best effort”.

‘Songs Cycled’ is released via Bella Union on 6 May. Taken from it, this is a new re-taping of ‘Hold Back Time’, VDP’s 1995 duet with Brian Wilson.
