Guanbara

Every year, Guanabara hosts a lively New Year’s Eve party, with an authentic Brazilian theme where the guests wear white, eat twelve grapes at the stroke of midnight to bring good luck for each month of the new year, and wear ‘ribbons’ of Senhor do Bomfim to assure yet more good fortune.

With live footage from London’s Big Ben and the fireworks on the Thames, two hours later we do it again – with a live transmission from Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro (hosting the largest firework display in Brazil).

The beat of the samba will be the predominant vibe, with resident DJ Vyzor on the decks plus a Capoeria show provided by Capoeria Cordao de Ouro and a dance show by Rosa Nazira. Meanwhile playing live will be Rhythms Of The City, part of the jazzy F-IRE Collective. Drummers, singers, dancers, horns and guitars combine in a spectacle of up to 75 performers – an event in itself.

And the smaller bands Minibloco and Nota 10 will present similar fusions – apparently they are the UK’s premier samba percussion squad and the team perform authentic carnival samba, plus many other styles including salsa, soca, reggae, funk and hip hop. Then the night will be finished off by the Guanabara institution himself, resident DJ Limao.

Guanabara is a little corner of Brazil in London, and it looks like it will be rocking for NYE. Tickets for dining are also on sale, at various prices.

Saturday 31 Dec, Guanabara, Parker Street, London, WC2B 5PW, 5pm-4am, £20-£60, dress code: white, more info here.
