A Greener Festival plants Festival Wood in Scotland

A Greener Festival

The musical eco-champions at A Greener Festival have planted 300 trees to create Festival Wood in a corner of the Dundreggan Estate near Loch Ness in Scotland as part of an initiative to “give something back to the great outdoors that we love to enjoy”.

Festivals like T In The Park, Belladrum Tartan Heart, Bestival, Deer Shed, End Of The Road and Glastonbury have all contributed to the initiative, as have the Big Green Coach company which provides coach travel to various festivals and live events, and A Greener Festival’s Helen Wright, Claire O’Neill and Ben Challis recently made the trip to Scotland to plant the trees. Slotting in to an existing tree-planting programme run by Trees For Life, it’s hoped hundreds more trees can be planted on the site later this year thanks to additional support from affiliated festivals.

O’Neill told CMU: “Festival Wood is a positive reforestation initiative from A Greener Festival. It is not an offset scheme as such, but an opportunity for the festival community to give something back to the great outdoors that we love to enjoy. A festival legacy that will grow and grow and be there for future generations”.

Rough Beats festival cancelled

Rough Beats

Organisers of independent festival Rough Beats have cancelled what was to be the event’s tenth edition, saying that theirs is the latest festival to feel the strain of “financial pressures” and a “difficult environment”. Set to take place from 8-10 Jun in Clapham, Yorkshire, Rough Beats was to host Pulled Apart By Horses and Gruff Rhys as its topmost-billed acts, third headliner Azealia Banks having withdrawn from her slot a fortnight ago.

A statement from Rough Beats HQ, which has promised to refund all purchased tickets in full, reads: “It is with a very heavy heart that we write to you to announce that, due to financial pressures, we have no responsible option but to cancel Rough Beats Festival 2012. The decision to cancel has not been made lightly – indeed it goes against every instinct of our hearts – but not to do so would put all the contractors, contributors, artists, traders and suppliers at risk of substantial losses”.

As to staging the event in coming years, organisers say: “We have to take stock financially, physically and emotionally over the next few weeks before we can consider what’s next”.

Snow Patrol to play Hyde Park concert for the Olympics

Snow Patrol

So the Olympics are getting ever closer people, are you excited? No? But think of all the traffic congestion and endless, unrelentingly tedious telly coverage… only once in a lifetime people. Personally I’m stocking up on my cans of Pepsi, because I wouldn’t put it past Seb Coe and his enforcers to stop all shops in London from selling any drink that competes with official sponsor Coca-Cola.

Anyway, if the congestion, tedious sports pundits talking nonsense and draconian sponsorship enforcers aren’t doing it for you, let’s not forget all the exciting music, and the line-up has been announced for the opening concert in Hyde Park as part of the BT-sponsored, Live Nation-organised, Royal Park-based, Olympics-celebrating live entertainment programme.

And with the oldies headlining the already announced closing show – Blur, The Specials and New Order – what fresh young happening talent will be taking to the stage at the start of the Olympics festivities? Why, Snow Patrol, Stereophonics, Duran Duran and Paolo Nutini. Well, probably a wise move, I mean it’ll be August, the kids will be too busy rioting to be enjoying pop music in the park.

The opening show takes place on 27 Jul and look, Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon has said words: “Performing to so many people on the most exciting day in sport for Great Britain will be one of the highlights of the last decade for us. We have been invited to represent England for this Team GB show, and we couldn’t be more proud. Seeing the torch being lit on the big screens before hitting the stage in this iconic location will be a great experience… we simply can’t wait”.
