Azealia Banks cancels summer festival bookings

Azealia Banks

So, Azealia Banks has withdrawn from a number of planned UK festival appearances, including slots at Rough Beats, Bestival, RockNess, Lovebox and Wakestock, plus various Euro dates at Rock AM Ring, Rock Werchter and Way Out West. Though Banks’ bookings at the Reading and Leeds festivals and Radio 1′s Hackney Weekend remain intact.

An official statement from the Polydor-signed MC’s management reads: “Azealia Banks has unfortunately had to cancel her remaining UK festival appearances due to recording commitments. Her October UK headline tour will still go ahead as scheduled”.

Said recording commitments, of course, relate to Banks’ forthcoming debut album, ‘Broke With Expensive Taste’, which is set for release in September.

Mike McSherry, organiser of Yorkshire independent Rough Beats (which was to host the ’212′ rapper’s first ever headline billing), speculates that the retreat might in part be due to a lack of live repertoire, as became apparent during Banks’ content-light Coachella set earlier this month.

He says: “Obviously we’re gutted. It would have been her first major headlining show in the UK and we were pretty chuffed about getting in there early and backing her to be a great act even before her debut releases. However, I think her management have made the right decision. As great as her Coachella performance was, the UK audience is going to need more than half hour of material from a headliner”.

Chazzstock changes venue

Chazzstock

The festival launched in memory of late Ou Est Le Swimming Pool frontman Charles Haddon, who tragically committed suicide in 2010, Chazzstock, has been forced to move to a new venue and become a one day, rather than two day event.

The event had been due to take place at Stanford Hall in Lutterworth on 9-10 Jun but yesterday organisers announced that they had been forced to cancel this due to licensing issues. Instead, a one day event at Wolverhampton’s Civic Hall and Wulfrun Hall will be staged on 9 Jun, with a number of the artists booked for the original event, including The Vaccines, The Horrors and Tribes, still performing.

The first Chazzstock was held at Koko in London just two months after Haddon’s death in 2010 and since then the singer’s friend Jack Bissell has been working to created a fully fledge festival to raise money for The Prince’s Trust.

In a statement, Bissell said: “It’s with a heavy heart that we have to pull the festival. It’s always a struggle for a brand new festival and as a non-profit event it has been even harder. We have fought hard to make Chazzstock Festival work, as we wanted to get the best possible result for Charles and the charity we are raising money for. [But] due to licensing restrictions and an impending festival date, it seemed a change of venue was the best possible solution”.

He continued: “The Vaccines have been very supportive of the venue change and we still want to put on an event that would make Charlie proud! I’d like to thank everyone involved in organising the festival and everyone who has bought a ticket for their support. It really means a lot to us all and we are sorry for any inconvenience caused. I still hope that one day, we can do a proper Chazzstock Festival. Maybe we should go with Charlie’s original plan and do it in the field behind his parents’ house!”

Tickets for the new event will cost £25, and anyone who bought a ticket for the cancelled festival can either claim a refund or exchange it for a VIP pass to the Wolverhampton show. More info here.

Tupac performs at Coachella via hologram

Tupac Shakur

Tupac Shakur might have been dead for fifteen years, but that didn’t stop him from getting up on stage and performing at the Coachella festival last weekend. Sadly, the technology for reanimating corpses is not yet quite up to scratch, and, given that Tupac was cremated, not much use anyway. Instead, those who gathered to watch Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg’s set had to make do with an animated ‘hologram’.

Created by British company Musion, the performance uses the same technology that brought Gorillaz to the stage (amongst other artists and public figures), projecting footage onto angled glass so that it appears as if by magic in 3D. As well as Tupac, Nate Dogg also ‘performed’ at the show, along with a number of not dead artists. Plans are now reportedly being considered to take holographic Tupac on the road.

Peter Blake reworks Sgt Pepper’s cover for 80th birthday

Artist Peter Blake has created a new version of what is possibly his most famous work, the cover of The Beatles’ 1967 album ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club’, as part of celebrations to mark his 80th birthday this year. Further birthday party plans are being put together to take place at the year’s Vintage Festival in July.

For the new version of the piece, Blake recreated the Beatles cover with an updated array of cultural icons, including David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, Vivienne Westwood, Ian Curtis, Noel Gallagher, Mick Jagger and, er, Delia Smith.

Says Blake: “I’ve chosen people I admire, great people and some who are dear friends. I had a very long list of people who I wanted to include but couldn’t fit everyone in – I think that shows how strong British culture and its legacy of the last six decades is”.

You can see the new artwork here:
