Five’s version of Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’ got to number one in 2000. Why were they always going to do better in the charts than Queen’s original version of the song? Answer tomorrow

OASIS BACK ON STAGE
Oasis restarted their US tour in New York last night following the midweek car crash involving Noel Gallagher, bassist Andy Bell and keyboard player Jay Darlington, which forced the postponement of several gigs. All were present except Darlington who is still recovering from his hand injuries – the keyboardist from support act Soundtrack Of Our Lives filled in. The band made no reference of the crash until their encore when Noel told the crowd: "You might have heard I had a little accident. You know ow many get-well cards I got? Fuckin' one, I got one. If this was 1995 and I was selling lots of records, then I'd be gettin' loads of good wishes. My record company didn't even send flowers!" In response to Noel’s tongue in cheek complaints Liam walked onstage with a bunch of flowers and presented them with a kiss. "They smell like piss," Noel joked. "This must be where he's keepin' the drugs."

COPYRIGHT DATABASE SYSTEM NOW AVAILABLE TO ALL LABELS
Following its launch at industry conference Midem earlier this year, the new database technology CatCo is now available to all UK record companies. CatCo is an electronic means for record companies to send their rights registrations to copyright groups PPL and MCPS. The new database package means record companies will only have to submit data once, and the same data can be inputted into the national discography database that is jointly owned by the recording and publishing industries.

Clive Bishop, director of the company that created CatCo told reporters last week: “CatCo has made significant progress since the launch, with around 40% of the industry’s sound recording data being sent pre-release to us. The manual process is being phased out and we now need the rest of the PPL members on board.”

Martin Mills, chairman of Beggars Group added: “Replacing the existing manual process with an electronic one brings many benefits of cost and efficiency, especially to the independents who can access it through the AIM labeldata software. This is a forward thinking project as well as an essential one, and a crucial central resource to facilitate the future business of rights owners as the digital age becomes reality.”

Rob Dickins, chairman of Instant Karma Records said: “The future of our business will be tied up with our ability to manage our catalogues not just individually but as a whole industry. CatCo is a brilliantly managed database and extremely comprehensive but its genius is in its simplicity of use. If CatCo did not exist we would need to invent it.”

OSBOURNE JUNIOR GETS DAWSON CAMEO
Jack Osbourne, son of Ozzy and one of the stars of MTV’s ‘The Osbournes’, filmed a cameo on US teen show Dawson’s Creek last week. Jack filmed his spot at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, which is used as the fictional Worthington College in the series. MTV and the syndicated entertainment news show ‘Access Hollywood’ were covering Osbourne's cameo, which will appear in the two-hour premiere of the series' sixth season, airing in the US in October. The entire family make a cameo in the latest Austin Powers film and Jack’s sister Kelly is in negotiations to appear in a remake of the 1976 Disney film ‘Freaky Friday’.

MORE JUICE DEPARTURES
More gossip on Liverpool ‘alternative’ station courtesy of www.radiogoss.co.uk. Word is morale is very low with the rumoured departure of the station’s breakfast show DJ the latest in a string of walk outs. Radiogoss point out that in Group Programme Controller Steve King's first year the station has either lost or removed its entire specialist line up (including four well-respected local DJs and the big local name dance DJ Dave Graham), a programme controller, a head of news, two separate evening show DJs, mid-morning DJ Mark Paxton, and now two breakfast show presenters. Insiders aren’t convinced its part of a secret strategy to win listeners, but more a sign of a station struggling to keep listeners and talent alike. It remains to be seen if they’re right.

NSYNC LANCE MAY NOT BE GOING INTO ORBIT
NSYNC's Lance Bass might have missed out on his space travel ambitions after he failed to meet a payment deadline, according to the Russian Space Agency. A spokesperson for the agency told reporters that there were a number of deadlines for instalments to be paid, but the first one had already been missed. Other reports say he has also failed to pay his training fees, even though he is already being trained in Moscow. There is no word as to why payments have been delayed - Lance is being sponsored by a number of big companies and a Hollywood producer. If he does get a place on the October mission he will be the third ever space tourist and the youngest person to visit space. It is expected to cost him around $20m (£12.7m).

The awards can be seen on MTV in the UK at 1am on 30 Aug, and will be repeated that later that day at 10pm

MANSON’S ART GETS BIGGER EXHIB
Marilyn Manson's first major art exhibition has moved to a larger gallery, apparently due to popular demand. The exhibit will now show at the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibition in Hollywood, instead of the Tamara Bane Gallery, with a private viewing on 19 Sep, and a public viewing on 20 Sep. Those not local to the LA gallery can preview the art at www.thegoldenageofgrotesque.com

SIXPENCE’S DIVINE DISCONTENT
Pop act Sixpence None The Richer, whose ‘Kiss Me’ was popular in the college radio charts, will release a second album this Autumn – ‘Divine Discontent’ - four years after their Grammy nominated eponymous debut. The delay was mainly caused by their original label’s financial problems - eventually label Squint got sold to Warner Music imprint Reprise. "I was scared we weren't going to be able to put out a record again," singer Leigh Nash told Billboard last week. "It was depressing and kind of painful not knowing what was going to happen. The fear of the unknown really got a hold of me." But she added: "I don't know if I would have wanted to be in the scene the last few years; it was so teen-pop-driven. I don't know if there was room for us. I don't know if there's room for us now! But maybe the break will help."

BEN FOLDS RECORDS COVER FOR SOUNDTRACK
CMU favourite Ben Folds has recorded a cover of the Jackson Browne classic ‘Doctor My Eyes’ to feature on the soundtrack of the upcoming Susan Sarandon/Goldie Hawn film ‘The Bangor Sisters'. The movie is about a couple of rock groupies who meet up after 20 years - one is still wild, the other conservative. The timing of the cover may help Browne, whose first album for seven years – ‘The Naked Ride Home’ – is out in October.

ICE CUBE HONOURED FOR FILM WORK
Ice Cube has been honoured for his film work at the sixth annual Urbanworld Film Festival in New York, where his latest movie premièred on Saturday. He was given the first Minority Entertainment for the Cinematic and Creative Arts (MECCA) award for acting, for "breaking down racial barriers and leading the way for the next generation of minority filmmakers". "It feels good, I feel real proud," he told reporters on winning the award. "I am only 33, I've got a lot to do. This is the first half of my career - I'm looking forward to the future and I'm proud about the past." Despite his optimism he was keen to stress that films focusing on the African-American community still struggle for financing. "Right now we're dealing with low expectations so also low budgets," he said. "Hopefully that will change in the future."

Answer to Friday’s pop quiz:
Ninja Tune Records was set up in what year by which slightly un-hinged producer duo, and, for a bonus: what were the names of the two members of the duo?
In 1990 by Coldcut – or Matt Black and Jonathan Moore for that bonus point (you only get a point if you got both though).
