I think it was while we were playing a Spida Lee track on this week's CMU radio show that Caro pointed out that while US hip hop seems to be going through something of weak patch at the moment (or, at least, the US hip hop that actually gets released over here is), homegrown acts are releasing some of the strongest material to have come out of UK hip hop in years. A few weeks ago, I was at the Great Escape in Brighton, and my attendance at this event mostly consisted of turning up to see bands and discovering I'd missed it. The one thing I thought I would definitely see was Kid Carpet, a) because I didn't really expect people to queue for seven hours for him the way they did for The Kooks, who were appearing just across the road and b)because I deliberately tried to get there early, and in fact did get there early. Only Kid Carpet didn't turn up. It didn't ruin my evening, exactly, but I must confess that I was fairly disappointed. Anyway, I was looking at his MySpace page last night and noticed that there was actually a blog entry explaining his absence, and it sounds as though it was pretty much beyond his control. I therefore forgive him, and duly nominate him for MySpace Of The Day. What? Sorry? You want information about who he is? Don't you know already? Well, his real name's Ed Patrick and he's created whole new genres he likes to call 'Kiddy Disco Punk' and 'Shit hop', and plays this stuff using casio keyboards and toy guitars. It's a revolution. No, really. It is.

EMAP FACING RECORD FINES OVER BAM BAM COMPLAINTS
Well, it's nice to break records from time to time, though the record EMAP are about to break isn't necessarily one you'd aspire to. According to the Guardian, media regulator OfCom is about to hit EMAP with the largest fine ever levied against a UK radio company after a series of complaints regarding the former host of the breakfast show on their Kiss radio station in London.
Bam Bam, real name Peter Poulton, left the London dance/urban station somewhat abruptly earlier this year of course, but it seems the host's departure won't stop OfCom from fining Kiss. Reports suggest they will be fined a record £150,000 because regulators feel the station failed to act after previous fines and cautions. Although considerably less than the £250,000 OfCom is allowed to fine stations, the fine will still be the biggest issued by a UK regulator against a radio station.
OfCom said that it was unable to comment on complaints made against Kiss, though it confirmed that there were nine still pending. A spokesman for EMAP said they would not be making comment until OfCom had made its ruling public. It is not yet clear if the OfCom investigations led to Bam Bam's departure from the station back in April, though it would explain why he was suddenly axed from the schedules while on holiday.

BOY GEORGE CRITICISED OVER COMMUNITY SERVICE
A New York judge has criticised Boy George because of his failure to pay a fine or to begin the community service he was sentenced to earlier this year relating to that incident back in October 2005 when the singer was charged with drugs offences, and with falsely reporting a burglary. As previously reported, the ex Culture Club star managed, by way of a plea bargain, to get away with a fine of just $1000 and five days community service, when he appeared in court in March.
As it turns out, the singer, real name George O'Dowd, has neither paid the fine nor performed the community service, and appears to be prevaricating about doing so. At a hearing in New York last week, Judge Anthony Ferrara issued an arrest warrant for O'Dowd because he had not appeared at court to account for why he had refused to begin his community service; the reason, apparently being that he did not wish to do what he was asked to do - sweep the streets - because of the inevitable media attention. A lawyer for the former pop star explained: "There's nothing wrong with that if that's part of his punishment, but it will turn into a media circus, and the press will be following him every day."
The judge ridiculed the singer's suggestions for the kinds of community service he might be willing to do. Those suggestions apparently included helping teenagers create a public service announcement, staging a fashion and make-up workshop and playing a DJ set at a benefit for AIDS sufferers. On the street sweeping Ferrara conceded "it's humiliation," but added that O'Dowd had accepted "a deal that had an element of humiliation". He went on to say: "he doesn't serve himself well by not paying the fine... we know he has the means. I put people in jail who don't pay fines. Why shouldn't I do that?"
Boy George has one more chance to appear in court, on 26 Jun, before that arrest warrant is acted upon.

DOHERTY FINED IN SWEDEN
Police in Sweden have fined Pete Doherty after finding traces of cocaine in his bloodstream after an appearance at the country's Hultsfred music festival. The Babyshambles frontman was detained, according to a police spokesman, because "he showed signs of being under the influence of narcotics." Subsequent tests showed traces of the drug, as well as benzodiazepine, a tranquilliser that Doherty has a prescription for. A second band member also tested positive for the drug, although it's not clear which one. Doherty was fined 14,000 kronor (£1,030) and will face no other charges, as he was not, for once, in possession of any illegal drugs when he was apprehended.
Elsewhere in Pete Doherty news, the Daily Star says that Jesus has inspired the singer to get off the drugs, although clearly Jesus isn't doing a very good job, given the content of the previous paragraph. If Doherty's 'friends' are to be believed, he believes that Jesus appeared to him in a dream to tell him to "pull himself together and repent his sins".
A 'source' told the tabloid: "He is considering giving away his money because Jesus said, 'It would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven'."

STONES TOUR TO GO AHEAD DESPITE WOOD REHAB
A spokeswoman for the Rolling Stones has said that the band's European tour will go ahead as scheduled despite those reports last week that Ronnie Wood had gone into rehab.
As previously reported, the Sun last week reported that Wood had checked himself into The Priory after starting drinking again. The paper quoted one of those pesky sources as saying: "Ronnie has fought a long battle with drink. He managed to keep his boozing down to a minimum while The Stones were playing their American dates at the end of last year. The first gig in Boston was the first time he had played sober and without a cigarette for the first time in years. But he has started drinking again over the last few weeks and it has got out of control. The stress of worrying about his mate Keith has not helped."
However, a spokeswoman for the band has said that Wood and the rest of the band will be fit and ready for the 11 Jul kick off of the European leg of their World Tour. That date in itself, of course, is a postponed launch, the original schedule having to be reworked after Keith Richards fell from a coconut tree while holidaying in Fiji.
Asked whether Wood's rehab would delay the tour further, a spokeswoman for the band said at the end of last week "the Stones are absolutely going ahead on tour, beginning 11 July in Milan", adding that she knew this "because I got a note saying see you all there".

ELEVEN ARRESTED AT FATBOY PARTY
Eleven people were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences at the Fatboy Slim beach party in Portrush, Co. Antrim at the weekend. The police seized several hundred ecstasy tablets as well as cannabis and amphetamines, but said that they had generally been happy with the standard of behaviour at the event. The eleven who were arrested were detained on suspicion of possessing drugs and possessing drugs with intent to supply.

THE WHO RECREATE LEGENDARY LEEDS UNIVERSITY GIG
The Who have played that previously reported special gig at Leeds University, kicking off their European and US tour by recreating the legendary gig they played at the college venue back in 1970. Surviving founder members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend also unveiled a plaque at the university to commemorate the original gig, which was recorded for the band's classic Live At Leeds album, considered by some to be one of the best live albums of all time.
The idea for the plaque, and to recreate the 1970 gig after its unveiling, came from BBC radio presenter Andy Kershaw, who was entertainments secretary at the university in the early eighties. He contacted the band's manager, Bill Curbishley, with the idea, and reports that Curbishley said "they'll do it" before he'd even finished explaining his proposal.
Speaking at the unveiling, Townshend told reporters: "It's so great to be back. I haven't been here for ages and I love it in Leeds", while Daltrey added: "Without those unions to play, the venues were thin on the ground, so my big thanks to Leeds and the others for being there."

BESTIVAL NEWS
It's the latest news from the lovely Bestival. And mark my words, it's lovely. Or will be, given that essentially, right now, Bestival doesn't exist. Just in case you were wondering, it exists on 8, 9 & 10 Sept at Robin Hill Country Park, in Newport, on the Isle of White. Anyway, the latest announcement is that Bestival are set to team up with er, Rizla on The Blue Pavilion: inspired by...Rizla, a new 24 hour ambient and electronic space set to showcase the best experimental and downtempo DJs and bands. The Bays are to curate the Friday, whilst Rob da Bank will take over for the rest of the weekend.
There's also a competitiony thingy for unsigned acts to appear, with the winner getting a thirty minute slot in The Blue Pavilion on the Friday night. Submissions will be judged by Rob da Bank, who will select a shortlist to be put to a public vote. Mr da Bank says: "The UK is producing some amazing new talent and I am really excited about Rizla's involvement in finding and supporting inspiring new acts. Hopefully this will give all budding musicians the chance to demonstrate their individuality and unique sound and offer them the notoriety they deserve."

SEX PISTOLS BOOTLEG TO BE RELEASED
Sex Pistols bootleg album 'Spunk' is set to get an official release this summer. The long player will be released on 17 Jul, which coincides with the 30th anniversary of the creation of the record. It will be released on CD and limited edition vinyl, and will feature the artwork from the unofficial 1977 release. Three bonus tracks have been added to the LP, 'Anarchy In The UK', 'Pretty Vacant' and 'No Fun'.

YORKE ON KELLY SONG AND SOLO WORK
Radiohead man Thom Yorke has spoken to Observer Music Monthly about a song on his new solo album 'The Eraser', about the suicide of Dr David Kelly. The singer said he did not, however, like to discuss the track, 'Harrowdown Hill', out of respect for the family of the deceased scientist, which perhaps makes you wonder why he wrote it in the first place. Referring to the family, he said: "I'm sure they're still grieving over his death. It's the most angry song I've ever written in my life. I'm not gonna get into the background to it, the way I see it. And it's not for me or for any of us to dig any of this up. So it's a bit of an uncomfortable thing."
In the same interview, he discussed his reasons for working on a solo album, saying that spending so much time with Radiohead was getting boring, but insisting that it doesn't mean he wants out of the band. He said of their recent work on a new album: "It felt like everyone was under obligation to do it rather than because we wanted to do it. And one of the things I had wanted to do for ages was get stuck into a bunch of things that I had been mucking around with that didn't fit into the Radiohead zone."
Speaking about the decision to release the solo album, out 10 Jul, via XL, he explained that it "didn't feel right" to release it via Radiohead's former label EMI, adding "It was done with the doors shut... without anybody watching. And it was done in a different context so it felt like it should be put out in a different context. Which is not saying that we won't put things out through EMI or whatever. I just don't personally feel that we owe anybody anything."
As previously reported, Radiohead have recently expressed a desire to stay unsigned, or rather, sign one-album deals only. Asked if the band might re-sign to EMI, Yorke said: "I don't know. I don't think we'd sign to anybody. Give someone a record when it's done if we feel that they can do it justice. That's it."

NME SURVEY READERS ON TICKET TOUTS
NME has been surveying its readers regarding the practice of ticket touting after the Department For Media, Culture And Sport asked for its input on the government's review of touts, which is looking into whether new rules should be introduced to control the reselling of tickets by third parties.
Of course the NME survey is part of its Kick Out The Touts campaign, which suggests the music magazine is hoping the results of the reader research will go very much in one direction, although they'd probably say that the fact that 70% of NME readers said they were anti-ticket touts in a previous survey means that the overall conclusion of this research exercise is pretty much a given anyway.

AIM AGM AT LONDON CALLING
Independent music trade body AIM have confirmed that their AGM will take place as part of the London Calling conference, which takes place 29 and 30 Jun at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London. The AGM will take place on 29 Jun at 3.30pm - though AIM members will be able to attend the exhibition bit of London Calling on both 29 and 30 Jun for free - and can also upgrade to a full AAA ticket for just £50. PPL APPOINT NEW GLOBAL GUY
Recorded music royalties body PPL has announced the appointment of Laurence Oxenbury to the new role of Head Of International. In the new role Oxenbury will be responsible for developing relationships between PPL and its equivalent societies around the world, as well as coordinating the collection of royalty revenues from overseas.
Confirming the appointment, PPL boss Fran Nevrkla told reporters: "I'm delighted to have Laurence on board with us in this important new role. The collection of international license revenues has become increasingly important - last year we grew our international revenue collection 42% from the previous year but there is still a lot of work to do in this area and Laurence is without doubt the best person to take that forward".

ROMANIA AND BULGARIA MUST TACKLE PIRACY BEFORE JOINING EU
The governments of Romania and Bulgaria have been told that if they want to come out and play with the other European Union nations they need to get on and sort out all those music pirates first. Both countries are due to join the EU on 1 Jan next year, but at a summit of EU leaders last week it was ruled that their governments must first demonstrate that they are taking proper action in fighting piracy, organised crime and corruption.
Both Romania and Bulgaria have long been home to prolific piracy operations, generating pirated CD and DVDs that are sold both within their own countries and across Europe. While recognising that some progress has been made in Romania in combating piracy in the last two years, EU officials have said that both countries must "step up their efforts to tackle decisively and without delay the remaining issues of concern".
That said, officials stressed that their ongoing concerns did not mean that it would be impossible for Bulgaria and Romania to join the EU next year as planned, adding that "with the remaining political will, both countries can overcome the deficits to reach the envisaged date of accession on January 1."

MORE MICROSOFT ITUNES RUMOURS
More possibly careless rumours that Microsoft might be planning its own digital music player in a bid to take on Apple in the digital music space. Of course, to date Microsoft has relied on third party music player makers and download platforms to encourage consumers to buy and store their music collections in a Windows Media format, but the majority of music fans are still opting for Apple's technology, even though doing so locks those fans to Apple's hardware and music store.
The consensus is that the model where people buy their hardware, software and downloads from the same company is popular with consumers, despite the wider interoperability that model creates. There have been many rumours of Microsoft entering the market with an Apple style one stop shop (ie Microsoft players using Microsoft software and playing music bought from a Microsoft download platform), but such rumoured ventures have either been non-existent to start with or put on hold before launch.
But insiders say such a venture is now high up the agenda at Microsoft, with Robbie Bach from the company's Xbox division being touted as the person most likely to lead such a project. Those moves may or may not have anything to do with the performance of the Microsoft powered MTV digital music platform Urge - some insiders are said to be disappointed at the lukewarm reception the MTV download service has received since its beta launch last month.

NEW DOWNLOAD PLATFORM FOR JAPANESE MUSIC
And more downloading news. Download backend provider 7 Digital have announced details of a new download platform which will be offering access to some of the best Japanese music.
The aim of the new venture - called donburitunes.com - is to give Japan's always eclectic music world a new and cost effective way of reaching a Western audience - the high costs of physically distributing in the US and Europe one of the key reasons why many Japanese artists who are huge at home have never been able to build a fan-base over here. Fans of Japanese music who in the past have had to pay for expensive import only albums will now be able to access that music at 77 pence per track.
7 Digital's Ben Drury told CMU: "Donburi literally means a rice bowl topped with food. We wanted to offer an easy way to consume a mix of tunes and encourage music lovers outside of Japan to try out Japanese music. donburitunes.com is a great example of the potential of the web and digital music to transcend the restrictions of selling music in physical format - allowing music to easily reach a global audience."
The service will be provided in conjunction with RightsScale, a Japanese digital distributor. NEW WEBSITE FOR ANGLO-JAPANESE CULTURAL THINGS
And another website for fans of Japanese culture now. Japanese trainer brand Onitsuka Tiger are backing a new website which explores up and coming Anglo-Japanese talent from both the music and wider cultural worlds. The site is called Found In Translation (http://www.foundintranslation.co.uk) and includes features on the crossover between British and Japanese music, art, fashion, film and animation. SKY ONE TO SCREEN ROBBIE GIG IN HD
We've not talked about HDTV much here in the CMU Daily, which is possibly because even if I did subscribe to the relevant Sky package that is currently broadcasting the high definition TV format, when put through the crappy portable TV I've got at home all that exciting futuristic broadcast technology would achieve more or less nothing.
But let's pretend for a moment that I do have a state of the art high definition TV set, and that I've subscribed to that aforementioned Sky package, because if that was the case, boy would my actually-quite-considerable technology investment be about to pay off. This September I'd be able "see more Robbie, hear more Robbie and feel more Robbie", which has been pretty much the aim of my entire life so far.
Yep, Sky One has signed a deal to broadcast the Robbie Williams gig due to take place at Roundhay Park in Leeds on 9 Sep in an HD format, with Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Sky One programming chief Richard Woolfe told reporters last week: "With Sky HD, the multi-camera offering and Sky's unrivalled interactive services you'll be able to see more Robbie, hear more Robbie and feel more Robbie. Audiences will feel like they're literally on stage with him".

SILVER CLEF WINNERS
It was the Nordoff-Robbins Silver Clef awards last week, and well done to Kaiser Chiefs who were named Best Band, to Editors who were named Best New Band, to the Foo Fighters who were named Best International Band, to Girls Aloud who won the Best Song Award, to The Eagles who were given a Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Osbournes, who got an award for their contribution to the music industry. I can't quite remember how these awards are selected, but it's all in aid of the Nordoff-Robbins charity, so the specifics of the award selection process probably aren't that important - more important is that a charity auction at the awards raised some £200,000.

SHARON OSBOURNE TURNS DOWN US FAME ACADEMY
Talking of Sharon Osbourne and large sums of money, word is that Mrs Osbourne has turned down an offer to be involved in a US version of Fame Academy. Sharon reportedly turned down the £3 million offer because it would require her to be in the US away from her family. One of those insiders told the Sunday Mirror: "Sharon doesn't need the money and can cherry pick projects she wants to work on. Shows like this demand a long commitment and obviously working on the American show would mean Sharon would be tied to the States for a long time. With Ozzy and the family spending more and more time in Britain, that could see them living on opposite sides of the Atlantic."

MADONNA TELLS FEMINA TO SHUT UP
Well, in fairness, it was her publicist, really. Madonna was, as you may or may not know, recently announced as the face of H&M's upcoming autumn range of clothing, a decision criticised by advertising guru Jerry Della Femina who thinks she is too old, and said "These kids trade in stars every two or three years, and many don't know Madonna."
The singer's spokeswoman Liz Rodenberg has responded: "I defy any 18-year-old to do a quarter of what Madonna does on stage. I hope Jerry Della Femina takes a nice pill."

PETA ACTIVISTS TACKLE BEYONCE
Now this is good. This is what animal activists ought to be doing instead of digging up dead people. A couple of PETA members have been ejected from a New York restaurant after confronting Beyonce Knowles about her use of fur. The interesting thing is though - they were, in fact, invited to be there. The campaigners bid for, and won, the chance to have dinner with the singer, in an auction held by VH1 in aid of its Save The Music Foundation.
Once at dinner at the rather up-market eaterie, Nobu, they spent several minutes questioning Knowles about why she wears fur and why she allows it to be used by her fashion label, as well as trying to show the singer footage of animals being killed for their fur on a portable DVD player. According to reports, and a video-recording made by the PETA pair and obtained by US website TMZ.com, Beyonce maintained a complete silence whilst her mother and sister defended her. For a short period, obviously, because the activists were then asked to leave. Which seems like a shame - though it being a very posh restaurant, the vegetarian options were probably rubbish anyway.
