MOYLES: TV WARNING, RADIO RUMOURS
Chris Moyles’ much hyped new TV show – produced by Chris Evans – launches on the rebranded Channel 5 (now calling itself, simply, five) this Monday. And before they even go on air they have received a warning from the ITC after they won a £500,000 sponsorship deal with Carling. An ITC spokesperson has told the Media Guardian they have reminded the show of the strict guidelines that cover drinks sponsorship, remembering ‘Hotel Babylon’, the last live TV show to be sponsored by a drinks brand which got in trouble after its sponsor Heineken insisted its products be seen on screen.
"They will have to be incredibly careful that they don't make an impression on the viewers that Carling has anything to do with the show's editorial content," the ITC said. Programme insiders are keen to stress the sponsorship deal gives the brand the usual opening, closing and break promotional slots, but no advertorial content during the actual programme. Heineken's 1995 sponsorship of the Planet 24 produced Hotel Babylon fronted by Dani Behr was one of British TV's biggest corporate disasters when Heineken bosses requested that fewer black people appeared on the show and asked for the beer to be given greater prominence on screen.
Meanwhile rumours are rife about Moyles’ future at BBC Radio 1. The Evening Standard yesterday claimed Radio 1 chief Andy Parfitt is seriously considering a schedule revamp in the New Year to combat an ongoing decline in ratings, and accusations the station isn’t truly championing new music. Rumours have it that both Chris Moyles and Dave Pearce could go. The paper also reported rumours that Xfm DJs Christian O’Connell and Zane Lowe were being courted by the station – the former for the drive time shift, the latter to host a new music show to replace the Evening Session when it is axed later this year. But a Radio 1 spokesperson denied major line up changes are around the corner.

NSYNC SPACE MISSION BACK ON...PERHAPS
It may be too late, but Pepsi have come forward with $34 million to help Nsync’s Lance Bass get into space. The boy band star’s hopes to board the next Russian space mission to the international space station were scuppered when the star’s backers failed to stump up the required cash in time. Now Pepsi are putting up the cash required in return for the star’s involvement in an advertising campaign back on earth. But a NASA spokesperson recently said that any last minute financial deal may be too late because Bass has missed crucial training time – whether the Russian Space Agency let him back into the mission remains to be seen.

Badly Drawn Boy is to copy the Doves’ marketing ploy of earlier this year and release and delete a single on the same day. His next single ‘You Were Right’, the first from album 'Have You Fed The Fish’, will be both released and deleted on 14 Oct. The result should be rush buying spree from fans guaranteeing a high chart position.

BPI WELCOME BBC 3 CONDITIONS
The BPI has welcomed the conditions the government have put on the BBC regarding its new digital youth channel, hoping it will encourage more innovative music programming. The government granted permission for BBC 3 on the condition it was a “genuinely distinctive, genuinely public service and genuinely innovative channel, using and fostering home grown talent”. Commenting on the conditions BPI Director General Andrew Yeates told us: “The conditions now announced for BBC 3 are particularly welcome in the context of concerns that we have already raised with ministers over the Communications Bill. We believe that the Bill itself should give the new regulator Ofcom a duty to deliver a diverse music service catering for tastes and interests in local areas.”

BBC COPY ITV’S SATURDAY MORNING MUSIC STRAND IDEA
When the new look Saturday Show hits BBC1 this weekend it will include a 45 minute Top of the Pops section, copying the way ITV show SMTV finishes each week with music show CDUK. The BBC kids show is being revamped as part of the ratings war against ITV, with new presenters Simon Grant and Fearne Cotton taking over from Dani Behr and Joe Mace this week. Some have claimed the TOTP strand is quite a cheeky carbon copy of ITV’s Saturday morning fourmula – but Cotton disagrees: “TOTP is the brand that everyone knows. It's something the BBC was doing way before anyone else."

FORMER BEATLES LEAD HARRISON TRIBUTE EVENT
Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr will headline a tribute concert for George Harrison at London's Royal Albert Hall this Autumn. They will be joined by Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Ravi Shankar and members of the Monty Python cast (Harrison produced the classic ‘Life of Brian) for a special gig on 29 Nov, the first anniversary of the former Beatle's death from cancer. The show will be filmed and broadcast in early 2003.
