MUSIC FESTIVALS PLC MOVES LEONARD COHEN SHOWS TO WEMBLEY ARENA, AS SHARE PRICE PLUMMETS
Leonard Cohen's two planned shows at the Hop Farm in Kent next month have been cancelled and replaced with performances at Wembley Arena on the same dates, it has been announced.

While the worldwide tour in support of Cohen's 'Old Ideas' album is promoted by AEG Live, the UK shows are being organised by Vince Power's Music Festivals plc company, which also runs the Hop Farm festival. Wet weather this summer is officially being blamed for the decision to switch to an indoor venue for the Cohen shows.

A statement from Music Festivals plc about the venue change reads: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, Leonard Cohen's two shows at Hop Farm, Kent on 8 and 9 Sep will no longer be taking place at that venue. However, Cohen will now be performing at a new London venue on the same dates. Cohen will still bring his much anticipated 'Old Ideas' world tour to the UK with the scheduled shows now taking place in the fully seated and historic Wembley Arena on 8 and 9 Sep".

Power added: "I can confirm the venue for the two Leonard Cohen performances has been moved to Wembley Arena. The concerts will be jointly promoted by AEG Live and Music Festivals plc. The decision to change the venue has nothing to do with the suitability of Hop Farm as a venue. Wembley Arena is a world class venue and being an indoor arena offers protection from the unseasonal cold and wet weather this summer".

Announced yesterday, ticketholders were offered refunds or the opportunity to exchange their tickets for the new shows, as well as an exclusive pre-sale for the best seats in the house (though as the change was only announced yesterday and tickets went on general release this morning, that didn't leave much notice to take up that option).

Tickets for the new shows range from £65 to £95 (depending on which site you choose to book them through), the same as those for the original Hop Farm performances. Each set will apparently last three hours, justifying the high cost of entry.

As previously reported, this year's Hop Farm Festival made a loss after disappointing ticket sales. Power's company's other key festival, Benicassim in Spain, turned a profit, but a lower one than in 2011. As a result, the company told shareholders earlier this month that "financial results for the year ending 31 Dec 2012 would be significantly lower than market expectations" and that it expects to report "a material loss" for that twelve month period. It also emerged in July that Power had made an unsecured loan of £750,000 to the company in order to provide more working capital.

Power floated his latest festivals company on the Alternative Investment Market in June 2011 to create Music Festivals plc. The flotation raised £6.5 million, but shares slipped from 65p each when trading first opened to less than 30p a year later. They currently stand at 3.5p, just above the company's lowest share price to date of 3p, which it hit on 9 Aug.

Despite the poor sales for this year's Hop Farm Festival, it's hoped that 2013 will see a turnaround for the company. Early bird tickets for both the Hop Farm Festival and Benicassim's 2013 are already on sale.

LL COOL J BURGLAR FACES LIFE IMPRISONMENT
The man caught by rapper LL Cool J burgling his LA home earlier this week faces life imprisonment, according to TMZ.

As previously reported, LL Cool J discovered the man, named as Jonathan Kirby, in his kitchen at around 1am on Wednesday morning. He tackled the intruder and detained him while his daughter called the police - according to reports, breaking the man's jaw and nose in the process.

A police spokesperson said yesterday: "A physical altercation occurred between the suspect and the victim, James Todd Smith, also known professionally as LL Cool J. My understanding is he just had him in custody with his physical strength".

Yesterday police announced that Kirby faced a maximum prison sentence of 38 years to life, after being charged with "first degree burglary with a person present". Bail was set a $1.1 million.

"BALL ROLLING" ON KINGS OF LEON LP, AS JARED FOLLOWILL CONFIRMS SIDE PROJECT
So, Kings Of Leon are definitely going to release a sixth studio LP. They haven't even started recording it yet, but that sixth LP ball is definitely rolling. Just ask KOL bassist Jared Followill, who confirmed that fact to Radio 1's Zane Lowe on Wednesday night. He'd really have rather talked about his new side project Smoke And Jackal - more on that in a sec - but Zane wasn't having any of it.

Asked if and when Kings Of Leon might begin making a new long player, Followill said: "We've been meeting with producers every day so we're starting to get the ball rolling on album six", adding: "I don't know what I can say, but we're definitely planning on starting the record at some point in the near future".

Meaningless quote supplied, he was then allowed to discuss Smoke And Jackal - a collaboration with Nick Brown of Nashville rock quartet Mona. He confirmed that the pair have prepared their first EP, 'EP1', for release on 15 Oct, and will precede it with a single titled 'No Tell' on 27 Aug. And you can listen to the latter here.

But, back to KOL, and the good news is that the new side project is also contributing there. Back onto the nearly-in-development sixth album, he added: "Doing the side project got my creative juices flowing again, and just doing something completely different, I feel like it can bring more creativity to [Kings Of Leon]".

RIHANNA, ELLIE GOULDING, DIZZEE RASCAL TO FEATURE ON CALVIN HARRIS LP
Calvin Harris has drafted in pop music's most chart-worthy stars to feature on his new LP. It's titled '18 Months', approximately half the time that has elapsed since the DJ released his last long player, 'Ready For The Weekend'.

And, or so tweeted Harris yesterday, the surprise guest artists are: Rihanna, Nicky Romero, Ellie Goulding, Tinie Tempah, Ayah and that Dizzee Rascal. Oh, and Dillon Francis.

Less revelatory names on the list were Kelis, Ne-Yo and Example, who have all collaborated on various already-released '18 Months' singles. Florence Welch will also lend her lungs to Harris' next track, 'Sweet Nothing', which is out on 14 Oct. All of which means we'll have heard much of the LP prior to its release, but oh well.

CLINIC TO RELEASE LP
Domino is releasing a new LP by Liverpool four-piece Clinic on 12 Nov, and its name is 'Free Reign'. The successor to 2010's 'Bubblegum', it was produced independently by the band and mixed with Oneohtrix Point Never's Daniel Lopatin.

Frontman Ade Blackburn says: "We thought it'd be fun to gravitate towards a sound that was louder and rawer whilst keeping the emphasis on songwriting. Making the record ourselves again, in a very DIY fashion allowed us to have that feel".

He adds: "We wanted to evoke the energy that our early more post-punk stuff had but without relying on the guitars to carry that. And so on this record, all the noise and abrasion comes from the drum machines and keys instead, that was something new for us".

Here's something else that's new, the 'Free Reign' tracklisting:

Misty
See Saw
Seamless Boogie Woogie BBC2 10pm (rpt)
Cosmic Radiation
Miss You
For the Season
King Kong
You
Sun and the Moon

SKRILLEX PLAYING MINI DALSTON DATE
Skrillex "and friends" will be taking to (and most likely breaking in two) the stage of Dalston's diminutive Shacklewell Arms this Sunday (26 Sep), a strange phenomenon I'll just chalk down to 'bank holiday mania'. Or the Notting Hill Carnival, since its listed as an 'after party'.

The show's promoter Eat Your Own Ears is issuing 100 tickets - ie The Shacklewell's maximum capacity - via a lottery, and fratstep fans can enter that at this link. It could be you, as the popular saying goes.

DEATH GRIPS MAKING ONE-OFF LONDON CAMEO
Having just detailed what's to be their second LP of 2012, the "cold, heavy, minimal" and still-unfinished 'No Love Deep Web', Death Grips have pledged to play live at a single date at London's Electric Ballroom.

Over 14s can purchase tickets for the show, which takes place on 7 Nov, at this URL.

FLYING LOTUS POSTPONES ALL-NIGHT SET, ADDS ALTERNATIVE
Remember that all-night Brixton set Flying Lotus mentioned he'd be playing on 3 Nov? Well, it's now not happening until an undisclosed date in 2013, for the quite valid reason that not all FlyLo's live collaborators were available to appear on the original date.

In his own words: "The team is strong, so when we do a Brainfeeder all-nighter in London, we ALL need to be in there... if we're gonna do it, we are gonna do it right".

Quite right. In the meantime, Lotus will instead baptise his new LP, 'Until The Quiet Comes', at an alternative show at London's Troxy on 16 Nov. Details on that here.

Refunds on Brixton tickets are available now, but can't be transferred to the Troxy concert.

RUSTIE, ALUNAGEORGE, KORELESS TO SHARE LONDON BILL
Rustie will headline a just-listed date at London's Electrowerkz next month, playing last but by no means least after sets from AlunaGeorge and Koreless. Promoter-du-jour Eat Your Own Ears will host the triple bill on 5 Sep.

KING KRULE ADDS HEADLINE DATES
Since his CMU approved new single, 'Rock Bottom', is being released (beside its B-side 'Octopus') on 24 Sep, it's only fair and just that King Krule tour awhile.

He's thus arranged live dates at Manchester's Soup Kitchen (17 Oct) and London's Electrowerkz (18 Oct), plus one at Point Ephemere in Paris, in case anyone's visiting the French capital on 9 Oct.

Failing that, Krule will also appear at this year's Bestival and Festival No 6.

JAGERMEISTER SPONSORS CHARLIE SIMPSON TO BREAK 'WORLD'S COLDEST GIG' RECORD
So keen is Charlie Simpson to break the Guinness World Record for playing the world's coldest gig, he's only volunteered to go to sub-arctic Siberia as part of a stunt sponsored by Jagermeister.

Fortified - I'm assuming - with 100 shots of that very spirit, Simpson will fly to the remote town of Oymyaok (population 470) to perform an 'Ice Cold' set in temperatures of -40˚C.

He says: "The Jagermeister Ice Cold Gig is by far one of the biggest challenges of my career, but I'm really excited to get out there and see a part of our planet that very few people will ever get to visit. It's not really an option to play my guitar wearing gloves, so I just hope my fingers don't freeze".

The fate of Charlie's fingers will be decided when the gig takes place on 24 Nov. More info here.

TESCO TO CLOSE MP3 DOWNLOAD STORE
Tesco has announced that it will close its MP3 download store at the end of this month. The news comes just over two months after the company bought a 91% stake in music streaming service We7 for £10.8 million. Indeed, as it announced the news of the download store closure, it was its new purchase that Tesco directed customers towards as an alternative.

Meanwhile, earlier this month Tesco announced that it was piloting a new service in its physical shops called Discs On Demand, which allows shoppers to buy CDs and DVDs featuring music, films and software, manufactured on demand from machines in-store. At the time, the company said that this would "cater to customers who prefer to buy 'hard copy' CDs and DVDs, complementing Tesco's digital film and music offerings through [movie streaming service] blinkbox and We7".

This latest move suggests that, back online, Tesco sees the access model, rather than ownership, as the ultimate future of digital content consumption. Or at least that it feels unable to compete with the big players in the music download space, Apple and Amazon.

DEEZER GROWTH STATIC, CLAIMS NEW REPORT
A new report on partnerships between telecom companies and music services has claimed that the number of paying subscribers using Deezer has remained more or less static for most of the year.

This despite rapid growth into new territories around the world, including the UK, where the streaming platform went live last September via a partnership with Orange, which saw the telco bundle a version of the music service in with new mobile phones. The telco partnerships in theory provides the freemium option that might entice users to sign-up for full subscriptions - something rival Spotify offers across the board, of course.

The report estimates that Deezer currently has 1.5 million paying subscribers worldwide, similar to the number it had before the service launched in the UK and elsewhere, either suggesting premium sign-ups have been disappointing in new territories, or there is quite a bit of churn. In the same period Spotify has signed up half a million new paid accounts.

According to paidContent, Informa Telecoms & Media analyst Giles Cottle writes in the report: "Despite its promising start, Deezer's growth has been flat for the past six months, with the service stuck at 1.5 million subscriptions. This suggests that some users who initially signed up to Orange to get Deezer free might have been tempted onto other packages once their Deezer/Orange contracts expired. It also suggests that Deezer has had relatively little impact in the UK, where it is up against the much-hyped Spotify".

Noting its network of free users, including those via its Orange partnership in the UK, Deezer told paidContent: "Deezer is made up of a community of over 20 million users, 1.5 million of whom are paying subscribers. In addition, Deezer has more than 800,000 Facebook fans and 350,000 Twitter followers".

That 20 million figure, however, is the same as Deezer was quoting when it launched in the UK, which suggests a drop-off or that Orange customers who buy contracts with Deezer's mobile service bundled aren't activating their accounts. Even if they are, it would seem that they aren't converting to full premium accounts at a particularly high rate, even at the discount offered.

CMU BEEF OF THE WEEK #124: ZAYN MALIK V PEREZ HILTON
Hey, do you like reading between the lines and wild speculation? Well good, because that's what you're going to get. Hold tight.

OK, our story begins on Tuesday over on the Twitter feed of One Direction's Zayn Malik, when he tweeted: "The reason I don't tweet as much as I used to, is because I'm sick of all the useless opinions and hate that I get daily. Goodbye Twitter", before adding: "My fans that have something nice to say can tweet me on the One Direction account".

And with that, Zayn Malik deleted his Twitter account.

An hour later, Perez Hilton swung into action, tweeting: "One Direction's Zayn Malik DELETES his Twitter! Called it! I said he'd be the first to leave 1D! This is the beginning!", linking to a new post on his site covering on this hot topic.

Oh Perez, your ability to draw your own lines to read between is only matched by your inflated sense of importance. How he got 'Zayn is leaving 1D' from a tweet asking people to only contact him via the band's collective Twitter account I do not know. But he did, and One Direction fans didn't take too kindly to it, making Hilton's name a trending topic on Twitter as they bombarded him with criticism and threats.

Perez, of course, loved this. So, presumably in an effort to keep things rolling, he put a new post live on his blog entitled "One Direction's Zayn Malik Caught Cheating On His GF On Camera?!", which features a video shot through the spy hole on a hotel room door purported to show Malik telling a girl to come back to his room after a security guard (who has just sent her away) goes to sleep.

You have to take Perez's word for it, because you can't actually see anything. Still, he took the timing of Malik's Twitter exit to mean that "the cheating rumors could be true, as Zayn deleted his Twitter earlier after all the hate tweets he'd been receiving!"

But now, it seemed, Perez had pushed things too far. And had underestimated the breadth of support for Zayn. Tweets and (subsequently) media reports claimed that Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus had all unfollowed Hilton in protest against his baiting of Malik and his fans.

Though, all that didn't seem very likely, and it wasn't. Britney Spears does still follow Perez, though Gaga and Miley don't. But maybe Gaga never did, Miley certainly didn't (after all, she and he have history). She tweeted on Wednesday: "I don't know why everyone's saying I unfollowed Perez, I never followed in the first place. I have no hard feelings just don't care to gossip".

Anyway, just after Miley's tweet went out, Zayn reactivated his account. Announcing his return, he wrote: "Sorry, I was getting some abuse on Twitter but I don't want to let my fans down. So I am back!"

Of course, Perez Hilton reported this on his blog, writing: "Twitter is complete again! ... Luckily, Zayn realized how much [his fans] needed his 140-character life updates, so he rejoined the Twitterverse with disregard to the haters who caused him to leave in the first place ... Glad to see ya back, Zayn! We hope you always feel the love!"

It's hard to tell if that last comment was meant sarcastically, or if Perez suddenly remembered recording this video.
