NEW SHOWS ON RADIO 1
Radio 1 has released details of an 'exciting' new weekend lineup including 'new shows and new talent'.
Among the changes will be a new 7-10 breakfast show fronted by Dreem Teem's DJ Spoony. Commenting on the new show Spoony told reporters: "I can't wait to get stuck into the new shows. I'm gonna blow the opposition out of the water, trust me."
Colin Murray – soon to be shunted out of the Evening Session slot to make way for Zane Lowe, has been given Sunday nights, on which he says: "I'm really chuffed that Radio 1 has given Edith [Bowman] and I this vote of confidence so early in our partnership. Myself and hollow legs Bowman are looking forward to working as part of a dedicated weekend team."
Nemone has a new two hour Saturday slot at 1pm, and will be followed by Trevor Nelson and Judge Jules, 'Backstage' with new hosts – tba.
Radio One controller Andy Parfitt said: "These new weekend shows are going to be fantastic. Colin, Edith and Spoony are all hugely popular with our listeners so extending their shows across the weekend was the right decision to make. Weekends on Radio 1 are going to be hard to beat."
The new schedule starts as of September.

50 CENT DISSES HOUSTON
Boasting the biggest-selling debut ever, 50 Cent has found out that a fan he snubbed turned out to be Whitney Houston.
Houston approached the MC at the airport after the MTV Movie Awards in New York earlier this month, and said "Hi". When 50 Cent ignored her she said "You're not going to speak?". To which he replied "What more do you want from me?", before turning his back on her.
50 Cent admitted being horrified when he realised who she was: "Oh man! Why of all people was I rude to her? I apologised."

REVIEW: The Evenings - Two tracks each from the Firefighters EP and the Dying EP (Self-released)
The Evenings formed as a reaction against "the staid nature of current electronic music". These (unnamed in the press material) tracks are taken from their third and fourth releases, and come on a dinky three-inch CD. And they certainly make plenty of racket. The first track, is about a minute and a half of early Pavement (with synths). Track two is the sound of the pub CD player when it finally succumbs to passive smoking. Three is more thoughtful - it would fit in an interactive museum or the Tate Modern - and considerably longer, with spoken Scottish vocals. Final track is the sound of an underground aquarium, all dripping echoes and unidentified scrapings. The Evenings, unlike so much electronic music, appear to have some musical sense, and for that we must applaud them. MB

GELDOF LOSES CRED
Bob Geldof says he has lost his musical credibility - becoming a kind of "Brother Teresa" by getting involved in world politics and charity. But he adds that he doesn't mind that many supporters of his work aren't into the music he makes today.
Geldof said: "If you, as a musician, leave the narrow circle of the music scene, you lose some of your credibility. I became a kind of Brother Teresa. Even the old ladies in the street noticed me. But the problem was that nobody buys an album by Mother Teresa. By now, I can do very well without those who only knew me from Live Aid. As long as my albums satisfy me and the critics, I'm happy."

MCCARTNEY DENIED PLEASURE OF HEADLINING GLASTONBURY
Glastonbury man Michael Eavis has confirmed he turned down an offer by Paul McCartney to headline this year's festival as something of a finale to Macca's mega world tour. Eavis told journalists yesterday that the former Beatle approached him about playing, but that he to refuse as the line-up, with Radiohead headlining, had already been confirmed.
Eavis said: "We tried to work it out with Paul - I offered him the headline on Friday and Sunday but he said that it was Saturday or nothing. I told him Radiohead were already booked but it was no good, so I had to say no to him."
A Glastonbury source said: "He may play at the festival next year though."

Tricky is set to perform live tracks from his new album 'Vulnerable' at the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street on 30 Jun at 6pm. The Bristolian Massive Attack alumni member will also be signing copies of his new album, out on Epitaph

METALLICA AT NUMBER ONE IN US
Metallica's new album 'St Anger' is number one in the US album chart having sold nearly half a million copies in its first. As previously reported the new album – the first studio release in six years and the first since the departure of bassist Jason Newsted - comes with a bonus DVD of the band playing the album live, and codes that allow you to access secret multimedia material from the web.
Whether the online extras secured the band their chart success we're not sure – though apparently the band hired a therapist while in the studio to ensure they performed better together, so perhaps that was what swung it.

FAT CAT'S FAT COMP
Fat Cat Records are to release a 27 track double CD retrospective entitled 'Branches And Roots'. What's more, the album, released on Jul 7, will be issued at a special low price! 'Braches And Routes' includes Funkstorung's remix of Bjork's 'All Is Love', as well as tracks from the likes of Mum, Kid 606, Matmos, Transient Waves, Fennesz and more. The label promise a varied collection of tracks united by a desire to avoid tried ands tested blueprints.

POPSTARS REJECT RELEASES DEBUT SINGLE
Popstars: The Rivals reject Javine Hylton will launch her debut single 'Real Things' (co-written by Javine with producers Stargate) with a performance at GAY on 7 Jul –the day of release.
Javine is believed to have signed a £1m three album deal with Virgin's pop imprint Innocent Records after a major label bidding war. Judging by Liberty X and Darius signing the runners up from these programmes is often better for business than taking on the winners.

SPECIAL DJ SHADOW 12"
DJ Shadow is set to release a double A-side 12", 'Mashin' on the 'Motorway'/'Walkie Talkie' on 23 Jun. The 12" contains previously unreleased and much sought after remixes including Soulwax's remix of 'Six Days' and UNKLE's remix of 'GDMSFOB' which features Roots Manuva. The enhanced CD package also includes brand new videos for 'Walkie Talkie and 'Mashin' on the 'Motorway'.

SO SOILED MEMBER IN TROUBLE AGAIN
A court has heard how So Solid producer G Man (Jason Phillips) 'dumped' a loaded gun as he fled from police. Phillips is alleged to have thrown the ME9 pistol loaded with seven rounds away, as police closed in on him following an incident in London last November.
A search of his flat the next day yielded a further 11 bullets. Three of the bullets were 'Dum Dums', designed to explode on contact and banned for public use.
G Man denies one count of possessing a prohibited weapon, one of possessing prohibited ammunition, and two of possessing ammunition without a firearms certificate.

WILL LIBERTY GET VU'S ENTS ASSETS?
Reports from the US suggest media company Liberty Media is set to finalize an offer of $12 - $14bn to buy Vivendi Universal's entertainment assets in the next few days. However a former deal which saw Liberty swap its stake in USA Networks for shares in Universal Entertainment might make the deal impossible – a clause in that contract said Liberty couldn't expand its stake to take majority ownership of any Vivendi company.
As previously reported Vivendi is keen to sell off its Universal entertainment companies to help tackle the financial traumas of the French conglom. Whether such a deal would include Vivendi Universal's music assets (in this country Mercury, Polydor and Island) is unclear.

CRIMINAL CONGA
105 people were arrested in Hulsfred, Sweden, on Saturday when 500 festival goers started a 'Conga' through the festival's camping area. Security were called to disperse revellers at an after-festival party in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Ulf Karlsson of Kalmar District police said: "They ran round and destroyed fencing. There was a risk that both people and property would be damaged. We decided therefore to remove people in order to avert any further crime."
22-year-old partier Mattias Jansson said: "All we were doing is dancing and singing about love and freedom."
All of the 105 detainees have been released without charges.

REVIEW: The Rocks - We Got It/The Bomb (Scratchy)
Any band with a member specifically for "shouting" are all right by us. Particularly when it's as falsetto as this... "We've got it, do you want it baby" is a great rock refrain too. This the The Rocks' second single, the first one having gone down a treat, and they are heartening proof that there will always be bands that sound like this. 'We Got It' is endearingly retro geetar-punk, but a touch plodding. 'The Bomb' is much more fun, sounds like it should be played on synths and is probably played on cheap red wine. Bet they're superb live, particularly if you like getting bruised. MB

GREENDAY HAVE A BONE TO PICK
Green Day member Tre Cool has told fans he will award one of them the chip of bone removed in a recent operation on his leg as part of an online competition. He originally offered fans the bone as a joke – but after such an enthusiastic response from fans he decided to go through with it for real.
The Greenday website says: "Hey you little freaky weirdos. I never thought anyone would really want my bone-chip but I did save it so here are the rules. You are to write the coolest Haiku and post it on the chat message board and then I, Tre Cool on greenday.net, I alone will judge the Haiku. The coolest one will get the bone-chip. Good luck bastards".

LATIN SPLASH 2003
The Latin Carnival will descend on Clapham Common with Latin stars from all over Latin America and the US from 29 Jun – 3 Jul. MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK FREE SHOW
Motion City Soundtrack will be in the UK next week to start their tour. Opening for Sugarcult, and to celebrate the release of their debut album for Epitaph 'I Am The Movie' on 23 Jun at 8.30pm they will be playing a free gig at The Betsey Trotwood on Farringdon Road, London on monday June 23rd. The Show starts at 8.30 pm and entrance is totally Free, so be early cause the venue is small!!!

THE DIESEL U-MUSIC AWARDS
The Diesel U-Music Awards will take place at Fabric on 3 Jul, with the unsigned talent supported by the likes of Electric Soft Parade, Coldcut, Howie B, The Scratch Perverts and Arthur Baker. The show will be filmed for a dedicated Four Music programme.
The U-Music Awards are one of the UK's premier unsigned talent events – thousands of up coming artists send in demos in a bid to be deemed the best newcomer in the relevant genre area (dance, rock, urban, electronic). Judging is still going on – the finalists for each genre will play on the night.
They will be supported by an impressive line up of signed acts including:
Live: Coldcut, Electric Soft Parade, Chungking, Est'Elle, JTWR, EZ Rollers, Ping Pong Bitches.
DJ's: Arthur Baker, Howie B, Themroc, DJ Skully, Scratch Perverts, Tim Love Lee, Vinyl Dialect.
The organisers have also promised that two special guests announced on the day.
