VUE AUCTION RUMOURS
Rumour has it that Liberty Media’s John Malone is quietly withdrawing from the bidding for Vivendi Universal’s entertainment assets despite being considered to be a frontrunner in the auction. Insiders reckon that Vivendi’s increasingly tough negotiating and increased asking price has turned him off the deal – Liberty recently bought out Comcast’s controlling stake in QVC for $8bn meaning spare funds to satisfy Vivendi’s growing demands are not likely to be available.
With MGM also out of the bidding that leaves NBC the favourites to acquire all of Universal’s entertainment companies, bar the record labels. That said other rumours suggest Vivendi CEO Jean-Rene Fourtou is now considering a flotation route.

TRICKY DOES NEXT BACK TO MINE
Tricky has compiled the next in DMC’s series of ‘Back to Mine’ compilations. Of the LP due on 15 Sep, Tricky said: “This is a mixture of stuff I grew up on and what I’m listening to now… I used to make loads of compilation tapes and I just haven’t had time for years so this has been a real pleasure.”

CARLING’S FINSBURY PARK FREE CONCERT
Limp Bizkit will headline a Carlinglive.com sponsored concert on 6 sep in Finsbury Park. The event will see Carling give away 20,000 free tickets on their website, carlinglive.com.
Bizkit’s new album is due to drop in Sep, and frontman Fred Durst said: "There's eighteen songs and I'd like to get them all on there. The saddest song is called ‘Drown’. It's about realising it's getting close to the end.”
Lets hope they do(n’t) walk off stage if someone throws a bottle at Fred.

REVIEW: The Rain Band – Temptation (Universal/Island)
The Rain Band are possibly the missing link between the Stone Roses and Oasis, no wait come back! They're more interesting than those comparisons might suggest. As a Manchester band they're clearly aware of their musical heritage but that doesn't mean they sound retro and they are sure of their own identity. The rhythmic shuffles of the Madchester sound and the anthemic tunes of the mono-eyebrowed brothers are clear influences but there’s also undercurrents of a more atmospheric moody sound (I think they sound like Black Rebel Motor Cycle Club which presumably means some people are going to compare them to The Jesus And Mary Chain). Like every Manc band worth their salt they also have their full quota of swaggering arrogance. Their signature tune is 'The World Is Ours' which with its rumbling bass-line, is as confident as the title implies. JW

MOTLEY CRUE SINGER CHARGED
Former Motley Crue singer Vince Neil has been charged with battery for allegedly attacking a prostitute at a brothel that he and fellow cock-rockers Poison and Skid Row had stopped at for tea and biscuits.
As previously reported, Neil allegedly grabbed prostitute Andrea Terry by the throat and threw her against a wall at the Moonlite Bunny Ranch.
If convicted, Neil could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

EMINEM IN COURT
Eminem’s alleged schoolyard tormentor DeAngelo Bailey's is seeking $1 million for the injury he claims to have sustained to his reputation when Eminem slurred his name and labelled him a bully in ‘Brain Damage’. Two years after the lawsuit was originally issued, Eminem is now due to appear in court in a bid to have it thrown out.
Mathers' attorney petitioned for the dismissal last week, saying that Bailey was attempting to make a ‘fast buck’, adding that Eminem's rhymes regarding Bailey were ‘accurate’.
Sing the chorus and it goes… ‘I was harassed daily by this fat kid named DeAngelo Bailey/An eighth-grader who acted obnoxious, cause his father boxes/So every day he'd shove me into the lockers/And he had me in the position to beat me into submission/He banged my head against the urinal until he broke my nose/Soaked my clothes in blood, grabbed me and choked my throat."

EMI TO GO PRIVATE?
EMI has denied Sunday Times reports that top execs were considering a management buy out making it a private company again. Despite the denials the label’s share price rose yesterday sparking fresh interest from potential buyers.

UMG DVD-AUDIO
Universal Music Group is set to release the first in its new line of DVD-audio products on 23 Sep. The label group will become the fourth major to use the format, after Warner, EMI and BMG.
UMG albums to debut the format include Aaron Neville's ‘Nature Boy: The Standards Album’, Beck's ‘Sea Change’, David Sanborn's ‘timeagain’, Peter Frampton's ‘Frampton Comes Alive!’, Elton John's ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’, George Strait's ‘Honkytonkville’, Marvin Gaye's ‘Collection’, Shania Twain's ‘Up!’, Sting's ‘Brand New Day’ and the Who's ‘Tommy’.
UMG's DVD-Audio releases have each been remastered and remixed from the original multi-track album master tapes.

REVIEW: Secret Machines - September 000 (679)
Imagine Grandaddy with more beards metaphorically speaking and you're halfway to understanding Secret Machines. This psychedelic trio, two of whom are brothers, relocated from the vast expanses of Texas to the chaotic intensity of New York, lured by the public transport system apparently. The long sprawling nature of some songs means this five track EP runs for almost half an hour. They sound like a slowed down, expanded Flaming Lips, with Wayne Coyne/Neil Young type vocals. The lengthy intro on 'What Used To Be French' throbs a repeated pattern and builds up layer by layer. 'It's a Bad Wind That Don't Blow Somebody Some Good' stretches out the notes in a minimalist fashion. The overall effect is spaced out and hypnotic. JW

NIRVANA BASSIST RETIRES
Krist Novoselic, former bassist for Nirvana and founder of the alt-country band Eyes Adrift (formed with Meat Puppets guitarist Curt Kirkwood and Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh in 2001) has said that he is retiring from the music business.
A post on the bands website says: "I quit. I can't deal. I can't read the magazines, listen to the radio or watch music television without feeling like I've just come in from outer space. I just don't get it and I probably never did. My lot in life is that every band I've ever been in just falls apart,"
He said he plans to continue to work in politics and hopes to keep jamming with Kirkwood and Gaugh, but says he has no plans to release any more records.

After their show-stealing Robbie-support sets at Knebworth last weekend, The Darkness have added seven new dates to their UK tour this and have been added to the Rolling Stones support bill in Hanover and Hamburg, this coming weekend.
The new dates are:

LAME ACAMEDY
Fame Academy 2 has lost nearly 1m viewers in a week.
The BBC 1 show has ruined any chances it may previously have had in competing with the second series of Pop Idol, which will go out at the same time on ITV.
What would be even funnier is if no one watched Poop Idol either. Where has everybody gone? Maybe Bill Hicks was right about those aliens.
