MONDAY 8TH FEBRUARY
Those of you who read other CMU publications and follow us on the various social networks we frequent are possibly tiring of hearing about One Tune: One Cause, the launch event for British Tinnitus Week being put together by Eddy tonight. But it's important!

So I'm going to tell you about it again, one last time, because those of you in London still have an hour or so to get down there.

--
For those who have not been paying proper attention, One Tune: One Cause will bring together over 20 DJs, who will each play a track in turn to create one big DJ set. It'll all be recorded and those in attendance will get themselves a free download of the whole thing. As well as that, Burn The Negative will be playing live and Eddy will be playing a full DJ set.

The full running order for the main event is this: MC Chicka Boo, Christian Nockall, Wrongtom, Cassette Jam, Way Out West, James Theaker, Mat Payne, Lottie, Adam F, DJ Fresh, The Loose Cannons, Adam Ficek, Losers, Jon Carter, Marc Roberts, Killaflaw, Othello Wolfe, Xpress-2, Jagz Kooner, Rock Da World, Shoplifters and Streetlife DJs.

It all takes place from 8pm til midnight tonight at Cargo in Shoreditch and it will cost you precisely nothing to get in (though donations to the British Tinnitus Association will be gratefully received). For more info, directions and suchlike, head to www.cargo-london.com/event/one-tuneone-cause.

As I say, it's all being staged to kick off British Tinnitus Week, something Eddy - as a tinnitus sufferer - is a major supporter of (as you probably read in last week's Update, or you can find out more on our CMU News-Blog here). As well as shaking buckets, reps from the British Tinnitus Association will be on hand to advise how you can better look after your hearing, plus Musicians Hearing Services will be there offering you Remix types a 20% discount on their special tinnitus busting ear plugs. Do try and get along, it's going to be brilliant.

Talking of discounts for you Remix people, here's something that's nothing to do with ears. Rather a special treat for any of you who have ever admired Eddy's trousers.

Come on, you can admit it, we're all friends here. King Remix is a big fan of Syke Clothing. Says the man himself: "Their jeans come with a major thumbs up from me, really really cool and nice looking, and I thought I'd have to keep repairing my Wrangler Floyds until death! I don't normally plug stuff like this, but I love these things and wear nothing else now".

If you head over to www.sykeclothing.com you'll find that they've discounted last season's line by 40%. And if you were to use the code NUS2010 when purchasing, you'd find that another 20% magically disappeared from the cost of your order.

Wow, how generous are we being today? And that's before we give away tickets to this weekend's Sugarbeat London bash and furnish you with an exclusive interview with Breakage. No need to offer anything in return. Well, several drinks at Cargo tonight wouldn't go amiss. No, only joking, though if you are coming down, some loose change in the BTA's buckets would be nice.

See you there...

Win Sugarbeat Club London bash tickets
As regular Remix readers will surely know, friends of the show Sugarbeat Club and Utah Saints run regular events in London, Bristol, Leicester, Leeds and Edinburgh booking the cream of the electronic scene.

This Friday sees their first show of 2010 in the capital (well, the UK capital, they did Edinburgh last month), and headlining is none other than Remix favourite Hervé. Also on the bill with him and the Utah Saints themselves will be Toolroom's Toni Jarvis and Skinny & Clarkie of Graffiti Breaks fame.

Meanwhile, in room two, you'll find Bombstrikes Records label boss Mooqee, plus Supatronix's Jurassik, Pigball's Hayz, Supafunk's Country Cockney, Skanks' Colins 303 and Boon. There's more info on the Sugarbeat MySpace. It all takes place at Jamm in Brixton from 9pm to 5am this Friday (12 Feb). It'll cost you £8 before midnight and £10 after.

We have a pair of tickets to give away to one of you lucky people. You want em? Just email competitions@remixupdate.co.uk by midday on Thursday, then we'll pick a winner.

I've been bombarded with calls, Facebook messages and tweets all day today. Some from the DJs on the bill at One Tune: One Cause at Cargo tonight, but most from individuals - DJs, producers, musicians, clubbers and gig goers - who have heard about our Tinnitus Awareness Week and felt the need to get in touch.

Either because they've just realised that they, like me, are suffering from this condition in some way, and are pleased to hear that there are people who can help them. Or because they know they hang out in the sort of places that puts their hearing at risk, and really ought to do something about it.

The last such message has just come in from Barcelona. It's reached me at ten past five, as I write this last minute Eddy Says. It says "I didn't know what tinnitus was till today, but now I know I have it, and thank you for telling me about this condition, because now I'm going to get earplugs".

I've had masses of those "I'm going to get plugs" messages today, which is brilliant. Because everytime someone does that, that's another set of ears protected, either from getting tinnitus in the first place or, for those already suffering, from letting the condition get any worse.

Getting the word out there is a big part of what Tinnitus Awareness Week is about. That's what tonight is about, what this column is about, and it's why Jagz Kooner was on 6Music earlier plugging our night and telling everyone about the condition. Thanks Jagz! And now you can do your bit, by passing all this information on, whether by Twitter, Facebook, email, or face to face.

And once we are all spreading the word, then we're ready for the next stage of all this. I want to help change the law, so that clubs and noisy bars not only HAVE to protect those who work there (and be fined if they don't), but also have to make their customers aware of the risks. And not just the obvious music-filled venues either. Even the bigger cinemas have sound systems that could cause damage, and they should be educating their customers too.

Just to clarify: what I don't want is for the sound systems to be turned down. That would suck. But it's all about enabling every gig goer and clubber to make a properly informed choice.

If I smoke cigarettes, I know - because the government have spent gajillions in awareness campaigns - that I will probably get lung cancer. I may not, but I might. Either way, if I then choose to smoke, I am making an informed choice. We all know the score: smoke now, enjoy it while you're relatively young and fit, but probably pay later. If you're cool with that, then I'm cool with that. As long as you knew the facts and made a decision.

It's the same thing for this. Sure, go to clubs and stick your head in the bins, get the buzz of sound jiggling your insides around, god knows I've done it. I just never realised, and was never told, that it may permanently damage my hearing. Thanks to the British Tinnitus Association, and this awareness week, and the Remix Update, now you know that it can. And if, knowing that, you still want to listen to music at the max, well, if you're cool with it, then I'm cool with it, just know the risks.

So as I say spread the word so everyone can make informed decisions. Tell that DJ, or muso, or clubber, you know who never protects his or her hearing, tell them to check out the facts. And if you want my honest advice, invest in some decent plugs, it is really worth it.

If you already have that constant sound in your ears, then protect yourself when in loud sound environments and it CAN improve. It won't go away (well, it's unlikely to), but take it from someone who suffers but has invested in some proper plugs, it really makes a difference. And don't forget that the British Tinnitus Association is there for you, at www.tinnitus.org.uk.

I talked to Adam F earlier. We're both very passionate about this, and he was the first celeb DJ to raise his hand and say "I wanna help you with this Eddy". After our lastest chat I increasingly think this may be the start of something really big. Together we could persuade some really big acts to come together, somewhere like the Dome, and do a proper bigtime fundraiser for the BTA, who have bugger all resources.

We could raise some proper money for research and get the government onside for some kind of awareness campaign. God knows they spend enough on STDs, driving, drugs, and this is something that's going to affect one in ten of everyone - probably more like 50% of everyone reading this, because if you're reading this, then you’re seriously into your music.

So any ideas of how we could fund raise or lobby those in power, please Facebook me; if you know your MP, please mention this to him or her. Sorry to bang on about it, but it's such a lost cause, and I do love a lost cause!

Thanks for listening and helping spread the word.

Much love,
eddy X

The Big Snow Festival - get a free hoodie worth £40
People often lament the end of the summer as the end of the festival season. But clearly it isn't. In fact, some might say it's only just about to get started, because standing in a field in the rain is all well and good, but you can't really beat sliding down a hill on some snow and then listing to some of the most cutting edge music around.

Organised by the people behind The Big Reunion, The Big Snow Festival takes place in Arinsal, Andorra between 14-21 Mar, with a line-up including Calvin Harris (DJ set), Kissy Sell Out, Stereo:Type, DJ Hype, Matrix & Futurebound, Toddla T, and Qemists. Plus, Eddy will be hosting a Remix stage, with a whole load of acts still to be confirmed.

We'd love you to come and join us. If you fancy it, head over to www.thebigsnowfestival.com to book your tickets. When making your purchase either online or on the phone, make sure you quote "REMIX" to get your free Big Snow hoodie (worth £40). Not one to be pigeonholed, Breakage, aka James Boyle, constantly shifts between everything from dubstep to drum n bass. Arriving on the scene in 2000, he released his debut album 'Here Come The Drums' in 2006, but things really started to take off when he signed to Shy FX's Digital Soundboy label in 2007. Last year, tongues started wagging again when he released collaborations with the likes of Roots Manuva and Newham Generals. As well as those two, other guests on Breakage's second album, 'Foundation', due for release on 22 Mar, include Burial, Kemo and Donae'o. We caught up with him to find out more.

How did you start out making music?
I started when I was about twelve by going to my cousin's house in Slough at the weekends and holidays to use Fast Tracker 2 on his PC. From there I went to the BRIT School and learned how to use Cubase etc, and eventually got my own computer.

What inspired your collaboration with Roots Manuva, 'Run Em Out'?
With 'Run Em Out', I really wanted to incorporate the music I grew up with. The kind of tunes that got played at family parties and everyone (kids and adults) would dance to. I'm also a huge fan of Roots Manuva and thought that his vibe fits perfectly for what I wanted to achieve. He was actually my first suggestion for who I wanted on the album.

How do you go about creating a track?
Normally it's just a loop in my head. If it's been stuck for more than 20 minutes, I try my best to get the vibe of it down as soon as I can. Sometimes I just hear a sound or sample and something will just click, and I can hear a whole track around it.

Which artists influence your work?
There are way too many to mention! I get influenced by so many styles of music it really just depends what I'm listening to at the time. I'd definitely say 80s soundsystem culture and dub music has to be the biggest influence though, it's the sound I was raised on.

What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
"Enjoy" and maybe then an apology afterwards! I think best way of hearing my music (judging from what other people tell me) is on a big soundsystem, or very late at night. Which is probably due to the fact that I do most of my work in between midnight and 6am.

What are your ambitions for your album, and for the future?
My ambitions are the same as always really, just to keep making music I enjoy, and hope that others enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoy making it.
