FRIDAY 15TH JANUARY
Dear Dr Dre,

While writing the salutation in a letter to you is very enjoyable, that is not the reason I'm getting in touch. I wanted to talk about this 'Detox' album of yours. Do you have any idea how long you've been working on it now? Nearly six years. I realise that you're a busy man and there are other people whose albums you feel you should lend a hand with, Eminem, 50 Cent and the like, but all these delays are getting beyond a joke.

I read an interview with you in Slam yesterday, in which you said: "Well, I'm working on it, but also I've been working on other people's projects; you'll probably hear something in a year or so".

A year? So, a 2011 release, you reckon? Are you sure this album's not turning into an overworked disappointment? Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but I worry you're losing sight of the prize. If possible, could you hurry up and get on with it, or just not mention it again until it's finished.

Many thanks,

Andy Malt
Editor, CMU

PS - Please don't let yourself get distracted by the attached edition of CMU Weekly, which contains all the week's top news and quotes, some recommended links, interviews with some excellent musicians, a playlist compiled by the amazing Marsha Shandur and a write-up of our favourite pop-based argument of the last seven days.

  JAY REATARD DIES
Cult indie musician Jay Reatard has died at his Memphis home on Tuesday, aged 29. Rumours of Reatard's death began spreading on the internet on Wednesday evening, before Goner Records, who discovered him as a teenager and released a number of singles and albums from his various projects, confirmed that the musician had died in his sleep the previous night. His second solo album was released by Matador last August to critical acclaim.

  COWELL CONFIRMS X-FACTOR US LAUNCH
Simon Cowell has announced that he will launch a US version of 'X-Factor' in Autumn 2011, and that, as a result, he will step down as a judge on 'American Idol' after this year's season. 'X-Factor USA' will also air on Fox, the US network that broadcasts 'Idol'. The scheduling means a clash between the UK and US versions of the show, calling into doubt whether Cowell could appear on both.

BBC ADMIT U2 PLUGGING WAS EXCESSIVE
The BBC has admitted it breached its own guidelines by throwing over its entire network to Bono The Bore for a whole week when U2's 'No Line On The Horizon' album was released last February (well, sort of). The Corporation's editorial complaints unit has now reviewed the whole thing, and conceded the Beeb's U2 week amounted to "undue prominence for commercial products or organisations" and in doing so breached BBC editorial guidelines.

  SERAFINOWICZ TO PLAY MCCARTNEY
Peter Serafinowicz will play the voice of Paul McCartney in 'Back To The Future' director Robert Zemeckis' unnecessary remake of 'Yellow Submarine'. In the other roles will be 'Shameless' actor Dean Lennox Kelly as John Lennon, 'Robin Hood: Men In Tights' star Cary Elwes as George Harrison, and Adam Campbell, who has previously appeared in such classics as 'Date Movie' and 'Epic Movie', as Ringo Starr. The soundtrack will be provided by The Fab Four themselves, Beatles tribute band The Fab Four.

INCUBUS DJ GETS NEW RESTRAINING ORDER
Current Incubus DJ Chris Kilmore has taken out a second restraining order against former Incubus DJ Gavin Koppell, aka DJ Lyfe, after claims that the latter made death threats against the former. Kilmore took out his first restraining order against Koppell, who was fired from the band in 1998, after he reportedly spat in his face in 2003. Koppell has now been ordered not to come within 100 yards of Kilmore or his girlfriend.

WEEDEATER MAN SHOOTS HIMSELF IN THE FOOT
Given that this has been filed under 'In The Pop Hospital', you should have already worked out that the headline on this piece isn't just a figure of speech. Dave Collins, frontman of sludge metallers Weedeater, really has shot himself in the foot while cleaning a shotgun. This has caused recording sessions with Steve Albini for the band's new album and upcoming tour dates to be put on hold while the remainder of Collins' foot heals.

Marsha Shandur, Xfm presenter
Marsha Shandur is a purveyor of excellent radio on Xfm and her weekly podcast, 'Marsha Meets...', in which she interviews stand-up comedians, is one of the reasons I continue to wake up in the morning. She is also the person responsible for the rather marvellous soundtrack on sitcom 'The Inbetweeners', which makes it extra exciting that she's agreed to put together a playlist of her favourite tracks for us.

Says Marsha: "Doing this was really, really hard and rather heartbreaking. I've had to exclude songs from some of my favourite bands (Clem Snide, Andrew Bird) and it's thin on the ground when it comes to the new bands I love (Tellison, Mechanical Bride), but in order to get on my Top Ten Favourite Songs list, I think you need to pay your dues. With the exception of Tubelord, who transcend all boundaries".

MARSHA SHANDUR'S TEN
01 Elbow Starlings
This is the closest thing I've ever heard to the musical representation of what it feels like to fall in love. All the joy and the shock and the gently bubbling warmth.
02 Sam Isaac Annie, Why Are You So Angry?
In spite of having heard this a thousand times, it still gives me goosebumps on every play. If you listen carefully, you can hear Sophie from My First Tooth, Rod from Bright Light Bright Light and Stephen from Tellison on backing vocals.
03 Glenn Miller When Johnny Comes Marching Home
I think being a woman in the 40s and being alive through the war would have been really tough but, oh, how I sometimes long to be there at a tea dance. It was tough picking just one GM song, but this won for the different voices.
04 Tubelord Night Of Pencils
This band make me insanely happy. I love that they clearly know great pop but choose to eschew it. The album is wonderful.
05 Regina Spektor Samson
This is my favourite song of the last decade. I want it played at my funeral. The chord change after the chorus makes something inside me collapse.
06 Maximo Park Postcard Of A Painting
I don't listen to this album that often because when I do, it makes me feel like I am clad in armour. As such, I save it for emergencies. Maximo are my favourite band.
07 Fionn Regan Snowy Atlas Mountains
On my iTunes, this shows up as my most played song. The drama of it has never worn out.
08 Al Bowlly Two Sleepy People
This battles with Regina Spektor's 'Samson' for title of Most Romantic Song Ever Recorded.
09 The Reindeer Section Where I Fall
This was a toughie - Snow Patrol have been one of my favourite bands since they started, but this song by Gary Lightbody's Glasgow indie supergroup side project is my favourite thing he's done, in spite of how understated and sparse it is.
10 Death Cab For Cutie Brothers On A Hotel Bed
If I was only allowed one album for the rest of time, I would take Fionn Regan's first. But I would certainly wonder for a moment whether I should take 'Plans', as it's one I've come back and back and back to. Oddly, this is a great running song.

Catch Marsha on Xfm on The Weekender on Saturdays 6pm to 10pm. You can tune through your radio in London at 104.5FM, in Manchester at 97.7FM, nationwide on digital radio, Sky and Virgin Media, and worldwide online at www.xfm.co.uk. You can check out the aformentioned podcasts here.

Jimi Hendrix's step-sister Janie on a new compilation of previously unreleased recordings by the guitarist: "Jimi was at home in the studio. 'Valleys Of Neptune' offers deep insight into his mastery of the recording process and demonstrates the fact that he was as unparalleled a recording innovator as he was a guitarist. His brilliance shines through on every one of these precious tracks"

Slash reveals Guns N Roses' classic line-up have turned down "eight digits" to perform together again: "Things were so abrasive by the time I left, I've never thought, 'Oh, wouldn't it be nice to get back together', because I know it wouldn't! When we were on stage we were a real force together, but it got to a point off stage where it was impossible for us to even be in the same room together"

Guy Ritchie announces the launch of his new label, Punchbowl Records, and his first signing, The Punchbowl band, the house band at his pub, The Punchbowl: "It's exciting to venture into the world of the music industry. It's a tough place, but I've witnessed this band connect with people first hand. They have every chance of being embraced by a wider audience"

Jay-Z denies claims that the video for his track 'On To The Next One' contains satanic and Masonic imagery, on account of his lack of golf club access: "I got a lot of money. When people get a lot of money, they start getting those rumours like Tom Cruise [and] Will Smith. That's ridiculous. That's crazy to me. I gotta remind people I'm from Marcy Projects. I can't get into a golf club in Palm Springs"

Meat Loaf announces his role as a judge on ITV's new reality show, 'Popstar To Operastar' by dissing all other ITV reality shows: "I was watching ['Dancing On Ice']. What the fuck is that? And I was over here in a taxi and I said to the driver: 'What happened to that awful 'I'm A Celebrity'?' He said it was still a big show, and I said: 'That is horrifying. It is just a thing for Ant and Dec to make money'"

Delphic frontman Richard Boardman says the band will not move from their home in Manchester to London on account of all the fake sailors in our nation's capital: "When we did our first gig in London the audience were posing, all dressed up as sailors or something, looking like idiots. We knew then that we didn't want to live there. I don't think bands need to be based in London any more"

Tips for 2010: Everything Everything. We've been fans of Everything Everything since sometime in 2008. The collision of pop and indie influences that makes their sound verges dangerously on the edge of being ridiculous, thanks to frontman Mike's often high-pitched vocals. But, and I need to make this clear, this is not an indie version of Mika. It's even better than that - www.myspace.com/everythingeverythinguk

Free Dirty Projectors single. Dirty Projectors only released their latest album a few months ago, but already they're putting out their second batch of new material. Following on from the 'Temecula Sunrise' EP, they are giving away a free single on their website, featuring two previously unreleased tracks, 'Ascending Melody' and 'Emblem Of The World'. You can also buy the single on 7" vinyl. Fancy! - www.dirtyprojectors.net

Tips for 2010: Daisy Dares You. Daisy Coburn is poised to pounce on the charts and hook her claws in repeatedly this year. She could have gone a little easier on the Auto-tune and that brash singing style can grate a bit, but songs like sweet ballad 'Stuck And Still' and the swirling tones of 'Next Few Minutes' show a real talent beyond the disposable pop of debut single 'Number One Enemy' - www.myspace.com/daisydaresyoumusic

Tips for 2010: Emika. 'Drop The Other' sounds like a squeaky clean R&B song that's been taken out on a heavy night and then left alone in a strange town to find its way home at 4am. In the rain. It's catchy and definitely has pop in its heart, but it also sounds damaged and subdued. Ninja Tune are giving away a Scuba remix of 'Drop The Other', which holds the essence of the original but gives it a bit more kick - www.ninjatune.net/emika

Joanna Newsom Album Announced. The US harp pixie is about to release a new album, 'Have One On Me', her Australian label Spunk has confirmed. It'll hit Oz stores on 19 Feb, while US label Drag City arereleasing it everywhere else on 23 Feb. Drag City have confirmed some of this, although they did so with a cryptic comic strip, which is less helpful than actual words but more fun - files.dragcity.com/images/have_one_on_me.gif

Tips for 2010: An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump. Riding in on a wave of unrelenting drums and fuzzed-up bass, An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump are every bit as intriguing and disturbing as the eighteenth century painting they take their name from. If you haven't already, this is a band that you very much need to get acquainted with this year - www.myspace.com/anexperimentonabirdintheairpump

Q1 How did you start out making music?
I WAS A KING: "I wasn't a good enough musician to learn others' songs, so I had to make up my own"

Q2 What inspired your latest album?
OU EST LE SWIMMING POOL: "The album, which is our debut, is based on pretty simple things. It's just "having fun" and "love" really. The two most important things in the world"

Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?
COMANECHI: "Play killer riffs with killer drumming, get killer melodies on top, then add killer lyrics"

Q4 Which artists influence your work?
UNGDOMSKULEN: "We are into a lot of different bands but it's hard to tell which ones make you sound the way you sound. We all like Nirvana, King Crimson, Yes, Frank Zappa, The Zombies, ELP, and Bowie, but we listen to all sorts of music all the time. Our minds are like gaping holes and we just suck it all in, even the bad stuff"

Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
PALOMA FAITH: "Be prepared for all your senses to be touched. I fly sometimes, though sometimes I land with a thud. I am never what you think, as I am multiple. Sometimes what isn't said is more powerful than what is. I hope to surprise you with what you least expect, but realise that predictability is not a negative thing. The mundane can be beautiful, so can the extraordinary..."

Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest album, and for the future?
FM BELFAST: "We hope that people will like it and that it makes them want to come to see our show. For the future, it's best not to think about it too much. It would be better, though, if the future turns out to be more like 'Back To The Future' than 'Brazil'"

#2: Dappy v a Radio 1 listener
When you're a celebrity, you come up against criticism more than most. People will scrutinise every inch of your appearance and every word you say to alarming levels of extremity. You just have to learn to take it on the chin and realise they're railing against your public image, rather than you as a person. Particularly if the main part of your 'look' is a bobble hat. Yes, this is advice mainly aimed at N-Dubz's Dino 'Dappy' Contostavlos.

The group appeared on Chris Moyles' Radio 1 show on Tuesday morning. During their interview, listener Chloe Moody sent a message in to the show calling the band "losers" and branding Dappy "a little boy with a silly hat". She later found two missed calls from an unrecognised number on her phone and sent a text message to the caller asking who they were. The response that came back was: "Your gonna die, U sent a very bad msg towards N Dubz on The Chris Moyels show yesterday Morning and for that reason u will never be left alone!! If u say sorry I will leave u alone u fuck".

More calls and abusive messages then followed, including one which signed off, "nana fucking niii, Dappy". So, good to see he at least remembers to stay on brand and use his catchphrase (albeit a sweary version) while sending out death threats.

Dappy later apologised, saying that he acted "in the heat of the moment" and offered to donate money to a charity of Moody's choice. I'm not entirely sure that something said 24 hours after Moody's original comments can be referred to as happening "in the heat of the moment", but anyway. A spokesperson for the BBC added: "He must have taken the number down from the production team's text console in the studio. We were unaware of this but will ensure it doesn't happen again".
